Honda's new AC-X saloon concept

Honda has also revealed the AC-X saloon concept at the Tokyo Motor Show. The Japanese manufacturer describes this concept as a next-generation plug-in hybrid. The AC-X (Advanced Cruiser Experience) concept is between the Civic and Accord in size.
Honda says the concept “offers a comfortable and enjoyable driving experience in urban and long-distanc
e motoring”. To that end, the concept is offered with an ‘automatic driving mode’ for more relaxed driving, with an ‘engine drive mode’ on offer for more spirited driving.
Specifically designed for long journeys, the AC-X gets the two joystick steerin
g controls that are common to all of Honda's Tokyo show cars. Dubbed ‘twin lever steering’, the system is said to reduce the physical stresses of driving, allow for an auto-pilot setting and more efficient auto-recharging in electric vehicles.
It’s not something we’ll see in the near future, but Honda has tested it in an old Formula One car, resulting in significant improvements in lap times. The four-seat AC-X concept showcases particularly advanced aerodynamic progression including ‘wheel diffusers’ that help contribute to the impressive 0.21cd drag coefficient.
Expect to see this less-cluttered, more striking design language arrive in future Honda production cars uncorrupted from these concepts, though you will still see different designs and types of Honda model being produced for individual countries.
Yoshikazu Kigoshi, general manager for Honda research and design, was open about the fact that Honda will “uphold the categorisation we think is necessary for markets as different as USA, Japan and Europe.”
The firm revealed last month that it intends to have a plug-in hybrid on sale in limited numbers in China, Japan and US in 2012.

BMW forays into used-car market

BMW India has made buying a pre-owned BMW easier and more reliable with the launch of its Premium Selection range. Each vehicle is carefully selected, examined for quality and sold with a BMW warranty as well.
The examination includes a 360-degree check as well as a technical and visual refurbishment. Additionally, every Premium Selection vehicle will be sold with a detailed history of servicing, maintenance and repairs.
The vehicles on sale will be less than five years old and do not have more than 1,20,000km on their odometers. They come with an up to 24 month/2,00,000km warranty (whichever is earlier) and buyers can also avail of BMW’s Roadside Assistance service any time of day, all year round.
Dr Andreas Schaaf, president BMW India said, “We believe that a decisive factor in the development of BMW Premium Selection business will be through establishment of exclusive and luxurious BMW Premium Selection showrooms of international standards at important commercial centers across the country.”
Vehicles can be ordered through exclusive BMW Premium Selection dealerships at seven locations in India, namely Bird Automotive (Gurgaon), Krishna Automobiles (Ludhiana), Infinity Cars (South Mumbai), Bavaria Motors (Pune), Navnit Motors (Bangalore), KUN Exclusive (Chennai) and KUN Exclusive (Hyderabad). Lexus launch in India confirmed

Toyota has officially confirmed that it will introduce the Lexus brand in India by 2013. The Japanese carmaker has been evaluating the feasibility of its luxury brand in India for several years now and has finally decided to go ahead with the launch. “We have been watching India with keen interest and we are happy to announce that we will bring Lexus to India in 2013” confirmed Yukitoshi Funo, executive vice-president of Toyota Motor Corporation.
The Lexus range will be sold through dedicated dealerships, though several Toyota dealers are likely to take up the franchise to take advantage of their service set up that requires common equipment for both brands. However, Toyota will take a very cautious and diligent approach to appointing dealerships. “We would rather have a few, quality dealerships than a large number of mediocre outlets” said Funo who also emphasised that he wanted to differentiate Lexus from its German rivals. Last month Kazuo Ohara, who oversees the Lexus brand globally, made a visit to India and gave the green light after intense market research, which included studying the dealer and service outlets of other brands.
Toyota plans to follow a top-down strategy and the initial plan is to introduce the LS saloon and RX SUV, both premium luxury models. This is likely to be followed by the GS executive luxury saloon which competes directly with the E-class and 5-series.
The company will initially bring the Lexus range as imports or completely built-up (CBU) units to test the market before considering local assembly. “We need consider local production to compete with the others in the market, but this is still being studied,” said Funo. It is likely that the compact IS models will be locally assembled in time.
The initial feedback and market studies for the Lexus brand have been very encouraging. “The Indian consumers’ awareness of Lexus is quite surprising and much more than we anticipated,” said Funo. However, the challenge will be to price the cars competitively, especially since Lexus will initially import cars and will be at a cost disadvantage in comparison to rival luxury brands that locally assemble and hence pay lower duty. Also, there is no diesel engine in the Lexus range which could be another disadvantage. However, Lexus will introduce its hybrid technology, which could click with customers looking for the ultimate in refinement.

Aluminium tech for next Mercedes SL

Mercedes will unveil its sixth-generation SL roadster next year. The new SL roadster will be the very first Mercedes in large-scale series production to use an almost exclusively aluminium lightweight construction.
At a preview event held close to last week’s Los Angeles Motor Show, Mercedes showed journalists a completed example of the new two-seater grand convertible’s ‘body-in-white’ superstructure.
Made from a mix of chill cast, vacuum die-cast, stamped and extruded aluminium, it allows the finished 2012 SL to be 140kg lighter than the outgoing steel car, and 20 percent more torsionally rigid – to the enhancement of handling precision, rolling refinement, performance and fuel-efficiency.
Mercedes’ CAD-optimised design for the SL’s monocoque is even stiffer than other aluminium-constructed rivals – or so the firm claims. “Our engineers have measured a Jaguar XK’s body stiffness at around 16,000Nm per degree of torsional deflection,” said SL Product Manager Bernd Stegmann. “The new SL has just under 20,000Nm per degree.”
The various metal castings and tailored blanks of the SL’s body-in-white are connected via different methods, depending on how much load they transmit. While some parts of the underbody are MIG welded, hemmed, bonded and bolted, others are joined via state-of-the-art friction stir welding – a technique that allows for particularly stiff, precise joins.
With mainly aluminium body panels, the only significant parts of the new Mercedes that aren’t aluminium are its pedestrian-protection-oriented plastic ‘soft nose’ grille, its super-lightweight magnesium rear bulkhead, and its tubular steel A-pillars and header rail. Steel is chosen here for its extremely high strength in the event of a rollover.
Mercedes’ engineers wouldn’t be drawn to confirm very many other details about the new convertible last week, which will be unveiled in the flesh at the Detroit motor show in January. But Stegmann did tell Autocar that diesel or petrol-electric hybrid versions of the SL had been ruled out.
“SL customers are extremely loyal, and they know what they want from the car,” he said. “Quality, refinement, safety, design appeal, and a certain amount of dynamic ability. But most of these cars are the third or fourth in someone’s collection: so fuel economy really isn’t a priority.”

New BMW 3-series review, test drive

It’s encouraging that the sixth-generation BMW 3-series, despite its very obvious eco credentials and its numerous technical innovations, is still just a good-looking saloon that drives rather beautifully at heart.

At first, the new saloon may seem like business as usual – with a slick and elegant new style that looks both familiar yet more thrusting. But beneath its new suit, the F30 3-series is dazzlingly different and superior to the car it replaces in every single area you can imagine. It’s more comfortable and more dynamically capable than before.

The new range will include the entry-level 2-litre petrol (320i) and the efficient 2-litre diesel (320d). We drove the 320d in the UK, which was only available in Sport trim with the new paddle-shift gearbox and top-spec chassis and steering systems fitted (optional adaptive dampers and sport-spec servotronic steering). BMW also arranged for us to drive a 328i, a 242bhp version of the 2-litre petrol, although it is not clear if this engine will make it to India.

The first thing you become aware of when driving the new 3-series is that there’s an incredible lack of inertia when on the move. However, it feels quite amazingly light on its feet and this can make it seem ever so slightly insubstantial as a result.

It may not be as fast on paper – with a 0-100kph time of 7.6sec as compared to 5.9sec for the 328i – but unless you’re really going for it in the 328i, the 320d feels the brawnier of the two on the road. The steering felt lighter and fingertip easy on the petrol variant compared to the diesel. The accelerator felt so delicate underfoot, the gearbox so smooth in its machinations, you almost feel like a passenger in the car as it wafts gracefully from one destination to the next.

Select Sport and it instantly feels even more alive, not just beneath your backside and feet, but at the tips of your fingers as well. And if you’re feeling truly in the mood, there’s a Sport+ setting available in this model as well, which brings even crisper responses from the steering, gearbox and throttle, and turns the traction control to a more exciting setting for good measure.

Compared to the petrol variant, the diesel saloon has more punch in the low- to mid-range, emits just as unentertaining a noise and for all other intents and purposes feels similar. The same fantastic range of chassis setups, light but lovely steering, superb optional eight-speed gearbox; ability to switch from smooth motorway cruiser to crisp B-road bruiser, and pretty much anything in between, all at the flick of a button.

So should you buy one? If Superman drove a car, in fact, he’d probably drive a new BMW 320d. And the rest of us would be more than happy with any other member of the range. Because be in no doubt, a new world leader has arrived – and it may take a while for the others to catch up.

Big end-of-year discounts on luxury cars

Big end-of-year discounts on luxury cars The luxury car market is full of serious discounts this month and leading the way is the German trio. Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi are offering selected models at prices difficult to resist.
Leading the way is Mercedes-Benz with the E200 CGI. The premium saloon is being offered with a Rs 5.5-lakh cash discount and a petro card worth Rs 2.5 lakh (3,500 litres approximately). This adds up to a massive Rs 8-lakh benefit. The base petrol variant will now cost you only Rs 40 lakh as against Rs 45 lakh on-road Mumbai. The E200 CGI has the same engine used in the C-class developing 183bhp from its 1.8-litre unit. Add the luxuries and space of an E for just about Rs 5 lakh more than the similarly specced C-class and it makes a compelling case for itself.
Audi is offering a Rs 5 lakh discount on the A4 petrol models too. That’s approximately 15 percent off the sticker price for the entry-level Audi 1.8 TFSI. It now retails at just around Rs 30 lakh. The 1.8 TFSI develops 160bhp and 25.5kgm of torque.
Not one to miss the boat, BMW will sell you the 320i and 320d Highline models with a Rs 4.5-lakh discount and the Corporate Edition with Rs 2 lakh knocked off the price tag. The 5-series too is being offered with a Rs 1.5-lakh discount. The base variants of the driver-focused 3-series are now priced on par with the X1. The 320i develops 154bhp and 20.4kgm of torque and the 320d churns out 174bhp from its 2.0-litre engine.
BMW sold 330 units of the 5-series in September and Mercedes matched it with 333 units of the E-class. Audi managed to sell 259 units of A4 in the same period, while the 3-series sold 220 units.

Skoda Rapid launched at Rs 6.75 lakh

Skoda Rapid launched at Rs 6.75 lakh Skoda has launched the Rapid saloon in India at a starting price of Rs 6.75 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi. The Rapid is available in both petrol and diesel engine options, and offered with manual and automatic variants.
Built on the same platform as the Vento (code: VW251), the Skoda iteration (code SK: 251) shares most mechanical bits with the VW saloon which includes engines as well. Hence, the Rapid is powered by the same 1.6 petrol and diesel motors both of which develop 105bhp, but in a slightly different state of tune.
In the looks department, the headlights, the grille and the fogs are similar to Skoda’s Fabia. To help the Skoda and VW bits blend, the Rapid gets a new bonnet, new fenders and a mildly altered chin. The bonnet is longer, the new fender has the Vento’s sharp crease built into it and the chin is slightly altered at the corners, where it merges with the Vento’s beautifully executed wheel arches. The rear is different from the VW Vento too. Skoda has inserted its ‘C’ motif in the tail-lights, the area where the numberplate sits has been altered and there is a new, more sculpted bumper.
On the inside, the cabin is almost identical to its VW counterpart, apart from the Skoda family steering wheel (which has no steering-mounted controls), instrument panel, gearlever and audio system.
The impressive Rapid will be available in three trims – Active, Ambition and Elegance, the last of which gets 15-inch alloy wheels and driver and passenger airbags. These new variant names are part of a revised branding system for Skoda, which also includes the company’s tagline, ‘Simply Clever’.
Looks like the hole left by the exit of the Octavia has finally been filled after all.

Suzuki reveals Swift EV Hybrid concept

Suzuki has released details and pictures of a new concept, this time a variant of the Swift, called the Swift EV Hybrid concept.
As the name suggests, this concept is powered by an additional battery that helps extend its overall range, a set-up similar to the Chevrolet Volt. While in motion, it is powered first by an electric motor and backed up by a small range-extending petrol engine. On battery power alone, the car has a 30km operating range.
No specific details have been mentioned, but it shouldn’t stray too far from the Swift Plug-In concept that was shown at the 2009 edition of the Tokyo Motor Show. The 2009 concept was based on the previous-generation Swift and featured a 658cc mill, offering 54bhp, working in tandem with a 74bhp electric motor, powered by lithium-ion batteries. Back then the series hybrid system offered around 20km of pure electric mode driving as compared to a 30km range for the 2011 concept.
In terms of looks, the Swift EV hybrid looks similar to the conventional version but features visual tweaks such as LED headlamps and tail lamps, a covered grille and wheels, modified interior that is white and green in shade and also features two large digital screens. The 2011 Swift EV Hybrid concept will be showcased at the Tokyo Motor Show.
According to Suzuki, the Swift EV Hybrid is strictly a concept, although there are reports in the Japanese media that suggest that the hybridised electric hatch could go on sale sometime in 2013.

SCOOP! Ford EcoSport coming next year

The new Fiesta may not have taken off quite as strongly as Ford expected it to, but the American carmaker still has a couple of aces up its sleeve. One of them is the yet-to-be-revealed EcoSport.
Known internally as the B515, this next-generation EcoSport will be unveiled at the 2012 Auto Expo, followed by a launch in Brazil in the first few months of the year. The current EcoSport is quite popular in Brazil and since India has similar market dynamics to Brazil, Ford is hoping to replicate that success here.
The EcoSport is built on Ford’s award-winning, global compact car platform (B2E) developed in association with Mazda, which majors on weight saving and torsional rigidity. Ford wants to milk this platform as much as possible and hence a wide range of body styles will be spun off it. Apart from the saloon, there’s a hatchback version of the Fiesta (expected in India in the not-too-distant future), the EcoSport and finally a mini- MPV (code: B516) which could be called the B-max.
Though the EcoSport shares plenty of bits with the Fiesta saloon under the skin, it looks completely different, and you would be hard-pressed to tell that the two have anything in common. In fact, as per these illustrations, the new EcoSport could pass off as a proper soft-roader, but it’s nothing of the sort. This is in fact a sub-four-metre car with hatchback dimensions, and a tailgate-mounted spare wheel that sticks out past the four-metre mark. Small-car regulations don’t count the spare tyre in the length of a car and Ford has taken maximum advantage of this rule.
What is plainly clear is that this car definitely has SUV written all over it. The upright stance, the high bonnet, generous ground clearance and subtle cladding make you think off-roader, and what’s even better is that it is fresh, boldly designed and well proportioned, all at the same time. There’s an attractive and striking inverse ‘V’ in the nose, the chin has a pair of menacing intakes and the tipped-forward stance makes it look like an alert slip fielder, always ready for action. It looks great from the back as well, with its pillar-less rear windscreen and sharply cut tail-lights. Large wheels are a must for an SUV and the EcoSport for India could get 16 or even 17-inch wheels.
The Fiesta DNA will ensure that this car rides and handles very much unlike an SUV, and the tall stance and high ground clearance will be perfect for Indian roads. Just don’t expect acres of space on the inside, for the EcoSport will be only slightly roomier than the Fiesta, primarily because passengers are sat at a greater height off the floor.
To keep in line with the regs, Ford will use the new 90bhp, 1.5-litre DV5 diesel which debuted in the new Fiesta saloon. Ford may bump up the power of the engine to make this slightly heavier (and less aerodynamic) car perform better, and we expect the overall gearing to be shorter too. But don’t expect the power hike to be significant; the IB5 gearbox carried over from the Fiesta is not rated to handle much more torque, and this will serve as a limiting factor. Also, since the EcoSport will use the identical platform and running gear to the Fiesta, it will be front-wheel drive only, with no
4x4 option.
Introducing a petrol version, however, will be much more difficult. A 1.2-litre petrol motor, needed to comply with the small-car rules, would be too underpowered and a 1500 or 1600cc engine would attract a higher excise duty and also make it more expensive and less efficient. So we expect the petrol, if at all, will come only later, once the EcoSport has been well established in our market.
The EcoSport, which cleverly combines the charm of an SUV, the practicality of diesel, cutting-edge styling and a very affordable price tag somewhere in the region of Rs 7-9 lakh, has the makings of a winner. At that price, it will provide a genuine alternative to a midsize car and even a hatchback.
Though the Premier Rio is technically the first compact SUV in the market, the EcoSport will be the first serious player in this virgin niche. This could give Ford a big first-mover advantage in a segment that could explode. This could be the car to watch out for in 2012.

KTM 200 Duke specs here now

KTM 200 Duke specs here now KTM and Bajaj Auto have lifted the lid on specifications for the upcoming trendy and radically styled KTM 200 Duke. The exciting and top drawer technology enriched streetbike is all set for an India debut within a few months from now.
India’s first Duke comes powered by a 200cc, single-cylinder, four-stroke, four valves, liquid-cooled and fuel injected engine. Bore and Stroke measurements are an ultra short stroke 72mm x 49mm, so expect the 200 to display a big affinity for high revs. Its bantamweight kerb weight of 137kg will make the 200 Duke considerably lighter than every Indian rival in its class, and 25bhp of peak power makes for a solid power-to-weight ratio of 182.4bhp per tonne. Expect a close ratio, six-speed, one-down, five-up shifting transmission.
The 200 Duke will carry the bulk of its weight low, including an under-slung exhaust system that sits just below the swing arm pivot section, to keep centre of gravity down for optimal handling. It also comes with 150mm travel suspension front and rear, with tough 43mm upside down forks in front and a mono-shock rear system, complemented by an ultra lightweight, inverted die-cast alloy swing arm.
Sporty, low profile tyres will wrap around 17 inch rims front and rear, a 110 section in front and substantial 150 section rear unit. Brakes are a 300mm disc in front gripped by four-piston, radial mounted calipers and a 230mm disc at the rear.

Rolls Royce Ghost EWB review, test drive

Rolls-Royce is going the extra length to make the successful Ghost an even bigger success. We give you the big picture.

The traffic light to turn left is green. But the lane is choked by Mumbai’s impatient traffic wanting to turn right. There just might be place to squeeze through but I don’t want to be the one to scratch a Rolls, so I wait patiently for the light to change. A traffic police officer sees the car and gets the traffic to clear the lane to let us pass.
As the errant bikers and cabbies make way for us, the policeman peers into the rear seat where our photographer Ashley is cosily ensconced. The cop’s eyes battle to recognise him – must obviously be a VIP – lording over the back seat.
Yes, when you are in a Rolls-Royce, you are a VIP, even if you are just a poor journalist. People expect either an Amitabh Bachchan or a Vijay Mallya to be gracing the car. So the excitement of spotting a Rolls is as much as the excitement of finding out who the person travelling in the car is.
So India’s super-rich now have a new car to add to their garage. In this stratosphere, big numbers is big business. Speed, performance, size and even the sticker price – the bigger the vital statistics, the bigger the bragging rights. And in this world, the new Rolls-Royce Ghost Extended Wheelbase (EWB) comes with all the right credentials.
The EWB version is 170mm longer than the standard Ghost, the rear legroom has been increased from 1075mm to 1245mm and the car has gained 30kg in weight. But you can’t tell the EWB from the standard Ghost unless you put them side by side. The extra 170mm has been absorbed into the design without disturbing the Ghost’s elegant proportions.
So how do car buffs tell a standard Ghost from an EWB? First look at the doors. The rear door is slightly longer, by 35mm to be precise, than the front. The EWB also gets smaller door mirrors because there were complaints about the earlier ones being too big. And the wheels are a different design.
It’s on the inside that the difference is much more apparent. The EWB Ghost offers more legroom than the more expensive, standard Phantom. The fact that the Ghost EWB costs much less than the Phantom actually makes it more value for money, if you can call a Rolls that. Standard on the EWB are some things that you have to pay extra for in a normal Ghost, like the panoramic sunroof, theatre configuration comprising two individual nine-inch TV screens, polished wood
table and the lambswool rugs. The car offers everything the pampered plutocrat would want. Only the more expensive Phantom beats this in giving you a sense of seclusion and isolation from the outside world.
So what is it like to drive? This is a question of purely academic interest, since in India the only person who drives a Rolls is the chauffeur. And if you are wearing a suit and tie, you are definitely the chauffeur. But the Ghost has been billed as a driver’s Rolls-Royce. How much of the Ghost’s ‘driving dynamics’, if you can use the term for a Roller, have been impacted by the extra 170mm and 30kg?
There are no changes to the Ghost’s drivetrain or chassis. It’s the same 563bhp 6592cc twin-turbo V12 driving the rear wheels via an eight-speed auto and air suspension with electronically adaptive damping.
The 170mm extra length hardly makes any difference to what is already a big car. And even the extra weight has not dimmed the driving experience. For such a large and heavy car, the Ghost is capable of phenomenal acceleration when called upon. This 2420kg car will hit 100kph in 5.0 seconds! It is deceptively rapid, and you have to keep an eye on the speedo to tell how quickly you are covering the continent. Rollers are not built to be chucked around corners with their wheels smoking and tail hanging out, and the Ghost is no exception. But keep things neat and tidy behind the wheel and the Ghost will respond with surprisingly swift and tidy transitions around the bends. It’s good enough to give the chauffeur the day off.
The Ghost has been a runaway success for Rolls-Royce. Last year it sold 2,200 of them. And with the Ghost EWB, Rolls is all set to better that figure.
So what’s next? How long before the folks at Goodwood roll out a line of body styles like the Phantom? So when Rolls does launch the Ghost Drophead and the Ghost CoupĂ©, we will be thereto bring it to you.

Mahindra XUV500 vs Tata Aria 4x2

At first glance, the muscular XUV500 SUV and the MPV-esque Tata Aria look as different as apples and oranges. But it is under the bonnet that differences start to become more pronounced. While the XUV500 is built on a monocoque chassis with a transversely mounted engine, the Aria has a conventional body-on-frame construction with a longitudinally placed motor.
The target customer though is the same. Both these ‘lifestyle’ soft-roaders are built to ferry seven passengers in comfort, taking pothole-ridden roads in their stride and making light work of long drives. You can buy either of them for between Rs 11 and 14 lakh. The question then is, which of these homegrown biggies is the best?
Style file
The XUV500 catches your eye instantly when parked alongside the Tata. The Aria, you see, is part-SUV, part-MPV, and that unfortunately means it lacks the commanding look of a true-blue SUV. It’s not that the Aria lacks presence – The sleek headlights and high-set grille give it an imposing front end, and the design has an air of robustness that’s hard to miss.
With the XUV, Mahindra has stuck to the SUV design rulebook. Its high bonnet, clearly distinguished greenhouse and muscular wheel arches give it much more ‘swagger’. It’s well proportioned too, with a wide track and hunkered-down look. Design elements like the rising window line and character lines on the doors look quite contemporary. Unfortunately, M&M designers seem to have gone overboard with the XUV’s detailing. The faux air vents under the headlamps are just one example.
2011: A Space Odyssey
Step inside the Aria and you’ll find that this is easily Tata’s best interior yet. The spacious front seats are hugely comfortable and visibility is fantastic too. The XUV doesn’t do too badly for front-seat comfort either. In fact, the seat is very spacious and visibility from the slightly higher perch is better still.
Shift your focus to the middle row and the XUV is definitely the more spacious of the two. Also, you sit higher in the XUV, so there’s ample space to stretch out even with the front seats pushed right back.
Although both classify as ‘seven-seaters’, they are best suited for carrying five adults and a pair of kids. The Aria does have an edge here though, as you can move the middle-row seats forward to free vital inches of legroom for the third row.
2.2 personalities
Both motors displace 2.2 litres, both have an identical bore and stroke, 85 x 96mm, and power outputs are similar
too, with 138bhp in the Aria and 140bhp in the XUV.
The DiCOR motor in the Aria is the more refined one and you realise this as soon as you drive both back to back.
On the move, it is quite easy to get used to the relaxed character of the Aria motor. Bottom-end torque is not all that great, so you need to work the gearbox to keep momentum. But once past 2000rpm, the Aria settles into a comfortable rhythm. It is an easy cruiser with enough pulling power to make highway overtaking stress-free. But its long-throw, five-speed gearbox is slightly rubbery in its operation and the clutch is on the heavier side, making hard work of stop-go traffic.
With a 200kg weight advantage, the XUV feels livelier at any speed and there’s a spring in its step which is missing in the Tata. The XUV reaches 100kph in 12.34 seconds, which is more than a second and a half earlier than the Aria.
In-gear acceleration is a closer-run affair and the XUV’s 12.36sec 20-80kph time is just marginally quicker, but the Aria closes the gap largely because of its shorter gearing.
The XUV’s six-speed gearbox is just not up to the mark. Yes, the extra ratio gives the XUV a long pair of legs on the highway, but gearshifts require effort, the clutch action is jerky and it’s easy to stall the car too, which takes away from the driving experience.
Weighty issues
Weight and efficiency are interlinked, so no prizes for guessing the more fuel efficient of this pair. In the city, the
XUV returned a figure of 10.2kpl while out on the highway the figure rose to 14.3kpl. The Aria’s city and highway fuel economy figures were a lower 10kpl and 13.9kpl, respectively, which are not too bad, either.
Ride and prejudice
On the move, there’s a lumpiness to the ride of the Aria at low speeds which is typical of body-on-frame vehicles. However, ride quality improves with speed and the Aria, with its double wishbones up front and five links at the rear, smoothens out everything but the sharpest of bumps with ease. Ride quality is pretty settled too, except for some low-frequency pitching over undulations.
Mahindra has equipped its soft-roader with MacPherson struts up front and a multi-link rear. Low-speed ride is marginally better than the Aria’s, but things change the faster you go. The XUV doesn’t take well to sharp bumps and you can always hear the suspension crash through potholes. Though the XUV is more agile, quicker to dart into corners and easier to park than the ponderous Aria, the overall handling of the XUV is only just acceptable.
Final words
Ironically, it has taken the XUV500 to remind us that the Aria, a car that somehow slipped under the radar, is a pretty competent machine. The XUV500 is quite well equipped, with every feature you can think of (except a sunroof), but what tilts the balance in this car’s favour is the price. For just Rs 10.8 lakh, you get the base W6 front-wheel-drive model and the better equipped W8 variant costs Rs 11.9 lakh which is cheaper than the base price of Rs 12.6 lakh for the two-wheel-drive Aria.
