30,000 Ford Ecosport Booked Since Launching

Ford Ecosport Interior
Ford’s Duster killer has indeed proven to be the golden goose for the carmaker. The EcoSport has been flying off the shelves & according to reports, around 30,000 bookings have already been received. According to one dealer, “The EcoSport offers a great value proposition. It’s available in a price range that covers a variety of vehicles — premium hatches, entry level saloons & budget SUVs. People looking to buy the Maruti Swift or Dzire are now leaning towards this car.”

Ford launched the EcoSport on June 26 at a starting price of Rs 5.59 lakh (ex showroom, Delhi) & in a range of variants with three engine options. It remains to be seen whether the carmaker’s move to recall the diesel version of the car has an impact on the rocketing sales.

Test Drive and Review of Ford Figo Facelift

Ford Figo FaceLift front view
Since its launch two years ago, Ford’s hatchback, the Figo, has had a great run & there’s no doubting that it has been the carmaker’s most successful car in India till date. However, considering the ever increasing competition in this segment and, in an attempt to better tackle rivals like the Maruti Swift & the Toyota Liva, Ford has launched an updated version of the Figo.

The updated car comes with a number of revisions to the exterior, including redesigned head  & tail lamps, a new hexagonal grille, revised fog lamp housings & eight spoke alloy wheels. Two new colours also make their debut – bright yellow & kinetic blue.

Ford Figo FaceLift front view interior and steering
On the inside, Ford claims that additional damping has made the cabin a quieter place to be in, & there is also the inclusion of audio controls mounted on the steering column, which, while convenient, are fiddly to use & we would have preferred conventional steering mounted audio controls. Also new is the blue seat fabric, along with a ‘Riviera Blue’ instrument panel colour.

While the Figo’s engine line up remains the same with a 1.4 litre Duratorq diesel & a 1.2 litre Duratec petrol, the manufacturer has tweaked the calibration to make the low & mid range even more responsive than it already was. & considering the current Figo is already quite a competent tool in city conditions, the improved calibration will only step things up a notch.

The new Figo comes at a marginal premium of Rs 3000 – Rs 5000 across the range, with the base 1.2 petrol retailing at Rs 3.85 lakh & going up to Rs 6 lakh for the top spec Titanium diesel variant, making it good value for money. But while the facelift does give the Figo a host of revisions that make it much more competent, we can’t help but feel that Ford may have missed a trick by not having power windows at the rear – a gripe that is sure to put some potential customers off.

Honda City AT VS Ford Fiesta AT

Honda city AT and Ford Fiesta AT interior
Not too long ago, automatics were rather unpopular on any car this side of a Skoda Laura. The general perception of them being more expensive than their manual cousins & less fuel efficient didn’t sit too well with buyers in such a price sensitive segment. Old school autos also ate into big chunks of the engine’s power & were about as much fun to drive as a bar of soap.

Things have changed though – our increasingly crowded streets & gridlocks mean that we spend more time changing gears than actually driving.

Funky dashboard complements the sporty exteriors of the Fiesta. Plastic quality is inconsistent though
Also, the modern automatic gearbox has come a long way from the slushboxes of old. Take for example Ford’s new Fiesta – it’s being offered with a twin clutch automatic – a thoroughly up to date gearbox. Ford believes it is more fuel efficient, shifts gears more smoothly & gives you more driving pleasure.

But we simply can’t take Ford’s word, can we? That’s why you see the Honda City auto here. It’s been the de facto choice in this segment since its launch in 2009 & stiff competition from Volkswagen & Hyundai didn’t ruffle its feathers either. The City has a conventional torque converter & has only five gears against the Ford’s six. The City is also just Rs 4000 more than the Fiesta’s Rs 9.7 lakh price tag.

Design & engineering

City's high driving position like most hondas is spot-on.
Visually you will find no difference between the manual & automatic Fiestas – you get the same swept back headlamps, distinctive grille & bold creases that add up to a sporty shape. The tail section looks too high in profile though & is a bit ungainly. The Fiesta’s biggest brag is its dual clutch transmission, a first in this segment. After the recent facelift, the City got some minor cosmetic changes. The front grille now gets a chrome finish; there’s a new rear bumper & different taillights as well.

Interiors

Fiesta has a 6-speed dual-clutch gearbox.
The Fiesta’s dashboard is nicely textured with soft touch materials but some plastics lower down look shiny & cheap; some of the switchgear too doesn’t feel premium either. What lets the interiors down is the rear seat, which simply can’t match the City for legroom. Headroom too is not as generous & the small rear windows add to the cooped up feeling. The Fiesta’s driving position is superb, the steering wheel, gearlever & seat are perfectly placed & the pedals are well spaced.

The City’s front seats are good, but not as nice as the Fiesta’s. Sure, there’s lots of space & the front seat cushions are generous, but the driving position isn’t anywhere as snug as the Ford’s. Where it does score over the Ford though is by having slightly better rearward visibility, & the rear seats are decidedly better. There is a generous amount of width & legroom & you feel less hemmed in here. The City now comes with light brown fabrics as opposed to the beige you used to get in the earlier car. The dials now get a cool blue backlighting & the chrome rings on the AC controls look nice.

The Fiesta is the better equipped car & has some unique features. There’s voice activation for the audio system, Bluetooth connectivity, climate control & auto folding mirrors, so it’s amazing that Ford has priced it at par with the lesser equipped City.

Engine, gearbox & performance

Honda City uses a conventional 5-speed auto
So how does the Fiesta’s hi tech gearbox perform in the real world driving conditions? Slot the gearlever in ‘D’ & you will find the Fiesta jumps off the line with enthusiasm. The dual clutch box feels good in traffic & you find it does a good job of selecting the right gear for the right situation. The gear ratios are shorter than the City’s & this helps with quick responses in the cut & thrust of city traffic. There is none of that gearshift jerkiness usually associated with twin clutch units. For ambling along in traffic, the Fiesta is brilliant & smoother than the City. The trouble is, as soon as traffic thins out, the Fiesta struggles a bit. This is mainly down to the engine’s lack of grunt – most of the power made by the Ford engine is near its redline so you really need to rev it to get the best out of it. The mid range is a bit flat as well & lacks punch.

The City’s torque converter transmission is not as smooth & power delivery can be abrupt at times. This makes it slightly tricky to drive smoothly in stop start traffic. If you do drive on the highway though, it’s the City that has the clear advantage. This is mainly down to the strong 118bhp engine & the quick shifting five speed auto. The City’s motor is free revving too. Our VBOX figures reflect this. The Fiesta takes 13.80sec to reach 100kph which makes it a second slower than the City. Even in gear, the City proves to be much quicker than the Fiesta.

The City’s engine/gearbox combo is more fun to use & in manual mode, the gearbox holds on to a gear & doesn’t upshift unless you pull the paddle (the Fiesta doesn’t have paddle shifters). The Fiesta doesn’t come with a manual mode; instead you get an ‘L’ mode which gives you more engine braking & the ’box stays in the lowest gear possible.

Ride & handling

If Honda is famous for its engines, Ford is equally well known for its driving dynamics. & the Fiesta, fine tuned to Indian tastes, is no different. Now, keen to appeal to a wider customer base, the car has been tuned to erase every bump & broken patch Indian roads can throw at it. & the taller springs & tuned dampers deliver the desired effect. The ride quality over poor sections of the road is simply superb. The Fiesta blots out most road noise over poor sections & the car never feels floaty at high speeds.

The City feels distinctly second best on the ride & handling front. The same section of road seems worse for wear, every poorly paved patch on the road gets highlighted & this is especially true at low speeds. The suspension is also much more audible than the Ford’s. But once speeds build, the City manages to tackle poor sections with less noise filtering through to the cabin. The City also feels the more nimble of the two. While its light steering fails to inspire confidence & feels vague at speed, it’s a delight in urban traffic. The steering of the Fiesta is well weighted & considerably more direct.

Fuel efficiency

Ford claims the Fiesta automatic to be very fuel efficient & our test confirms this. In town, the Fiesta returned a impressive 10.3kpl as against the City’s 9.5kpl, while on the highway the Honda’s tall gearing means it returned slightly better figures than the Ford.

Chevrolet is planning to get its SUV Trailblazer in India

chevrolet trailblazer
Chevrolet is planning to get its new SUV,  Trailblazer, in India. Slated to compete with the likes of the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour, this body-on-frame SUV will powered by a choice of 2.8-litre with 180bhp or 2.5-litre, 150bhp diesel units. The larger is 2.8 common-rail diesel makes a very strong 47.8 Kgm, incidentally 10kgm up on both the 3.0-litre Fortuner and Endeavour.

The Trailblazer is an attractive looking SUV and the company says it will be the most clean-sheet truck it has designed in its 100-year history. On the inside too, the SUV is expected to have more space than the Endeavour and the Fortuner. Chevy claims the Trailblazer will sport car-like features and will be a proper seven seater.

GM is hoping to assemble the Trailblazer at its Halol facility, where it currently carries out all its CKD operations. We expect the SUV to be priced around Rs 17 lakh.

The new Ford Eco Sport is not a small car

new ford eco sport
When the new FORD EcoSport was 1st revealed in Auto Expo 2012, there was many reasons to believe that the car will be under the hallowed 4 metre mark. The choice of engines is a 1.5 litre diesel engine and 1.0 litre petrol one, will be ideal to benefit from excise duty . This notion was further bolstered by inclusion of tailgate mounted spare wheel which was according to the excise rules and is not measured as a part of length of the car. The global mini SUV is likely to longer than the 4 metres in interests of space and the styling, if so it will not qualify for the savings of small car excise duty.

Ford has held its specification, mainly the dimensions, close to the chest, but when we asked that if the EcoSport met to the sub 4 metre cutoff from a bumper to bumper, Michael Boneham, the president and managing director of Ford India Ltd. said, “No, it does not.”

As India will be the lead market of  EcoSport – an older generation model is already sold in the countries-Brazil – Ford do not want to compromise with the standards of space and styling which is already been set. As a result, the car is expected to be closer to be 4.25m in length, which is similar to the outgoing model. This decision was taken by criticism that the new Fiesta which is too much cramped in the rear seat, the mistake Ford do not want to repeat with EcoSport.

ford eco sport side view
The company plans to offset the penalty of a higher excise duty with high levels of localisation. However, Ford is believed to be working on a sub-four-metre version by trimming precious millimetres off bumpers, but it is very tightly lipped about that. We expect that EcoSport will start at Rs 7 lakh for the base model and go up Rs 10 lakh for the top most diesel version.

Interview: Joe Hinrichs, President of Asia Pacific and Africa, Ford

The EcoSport is an all-new segment in India. What potential will it have?

We actually did a lot of market research with the EcoSport and see it as an opportunity to give an SUV option on a B-segment platform. It gives new customers an aspirational urban SUV. When we launched the EcoSport about nine years ago, in Brazil, the same kind of opportunity existed. It established a new segment and took off, and has been a segment leader in that whole time period since its launch. So we see the same kind of potential in India.

We understand that the EcoSport isn’t a sub-four-metre car, so you won’t get the excise benefit. How does this impact you?

We are going to find cost savings with high local content. This is a globally-designed vehicle for global markets. It’s going to be built in Brazil, Thailand, and here in India. For us, the proportions and styling were critical because this is an aspirational vehicle. We just wanted to make sure that the design was right.

Can we expect more body styles from the same platform?

In Europe, we’ve announced the B-Max which is a sliding door MPV. We haven’t gone further than that but the key thing for India is to go where the customers are. So where there’s volume opportunity in India, we will be there.

The Fiesta hatch presents opportunities for volumes. Any plans?

The hatchback version of the Fiesta has been very successful globally. It looks great. So obviously it’s something we’ll consider.

Ford EcoSport revealed

Ford EcoSport revealed
Here are the first ever images of Ford’s all new global vehicle, the EcoSport. This next-generation compact SUV will take centre stage at Ford's high-tech interactive stand which will cover around 1,400 square metres.

The EcoSport is the latest ‘One Ford’ global product, a vehicle designed to help expand Ford's footprint in the world's fastest-growing auto markets, including India. It will be the second of eight products Ford plans to bring to India by mid-decade for which the company will invest US$ 2 billion in the development and production of the new vehicles.

Ford EcoSport revealed
Known internally as the B515, this next-generation EcoSport is built on Ford’s award-winning global compact car platform (B2E) developed with Mazda, which majors on weight saving and torsional rigidity.

Though the EcoSport shares plenty of bits with the new Fiesta saloon under the skin, it looks completely different, and you would be hard-pressed to tell that the two have anything in common.

What is plainly clear is that the design definitely has SUV written all over it. The five-door EcoSport gets chunky, technical styling, and a very space-efficient interior. A large trapezoidal front grille dominates the front end, while the front headlights are slimmer and more technical than on the Fiesta.

The lower front bumper and side sills get cladding, while there are also muscular wheel arches and a fixed spare wheel at the back to further emphasise its off-road intentions. The roof gets chrome rails and the rear side windows have the familiar Ford upwards kink in the window line.

Ford EcoSport revealed
Ford will debut a new 1.0-litre, three-cylinder, direct-injection turbo-petrol motor in the EcoSport – a world debut – that will be capable of developing power similar to a bigger, 1.6-litre motor. It will also deliver class-leading fuel economy. The car will also get the 1.5-litre diesel engine that currently does duty in the Fiesta.

The EcoSport, which cleverly combines the charm of an SUV, the frugality of small engines, cutting-edge styling and a very affordable price tag somewhere in the region of Rs 7-9 lakh, has the makings of a winner. At that price, it will provide a genuine alternative to a midsize car or even a premium hatchback.

Though the Premier Rio was technically the first compact SUV in the market, the EcoSport will be the first serious player in this virgin niche. This could give Ford a big first-mover advantage in a segment that could explode.

Ford confirms Auto Expo plans

Ford has confirmed that it will preview an all-new global vehicle at the Auto Expo.
This vehicle, the EcoSport, will be sold in India and other global markets. This next-generation vehicle will take centrestage on Ford's high-tech and interactive stand which will cover around 1,400 square metres. The EcoSport will be the latest One Ford global product, a vehicle designed to help expand Ford's footprint in the world's fastest-growing auto markets, including India. It will be the second of eight products Ford plans to bring to India by mid-decade.
The EcoSport will be among a showcase of 12 vehicles on the Ford stand including the Figo, the All-New Fiesta, the Classic and the Endeavour.
The All-New Ford Fiesta four-door saloon, soon to be available with the new PowerShift automatic transmission, is another step in Ford's strategy to bring the latest technology to India. Ford says, compared to traditional four-speed automatics, the PowerShift transmission can improve fuel economy by up to nine percent
The company’s other expo highlights include comprehensive safety and quality displays, a 3D theatre, live shows and a crowd-sourced, interactive driving game.

Ford India Discover Smart Drive season two kicks off

Ford India kicked off its second season of the Discover Smart Drive (DSD). The show will cover 28 cities, 6400km across India in eight days and will conclude in Nepal. The winner gets the chance to drive the Figo in Nepal and will also get a helicopter ride over the Himalayas. The drive kicks off simultaneously on December 5 from Jammu, Lucknow, Mumbai and Chennai and comprises four legs.
Ford India selected the participants from a contest held on its Ford Figo Facebook page. Participants were asked to submit videos to convince the jury of their candidature.
Flagging off the drive from Mumbai today, Ford India executive director marketing, sales and service Niger Wark said, “We’ve tried to make the second season of DSD exciting and challenging at the same time. The winners also get to see that the Figo is a popular car beyond India’s borders and cherish the experience of a lifetime by visiting an exciting tourist destination.”

SCOOP! Ford EcoSport coming next year

The new Fiesta may not have taken off quite as strongly as Ford expected it to, but the American carmaker still has a couple of aces up its sleeve. One of them is the yet-to-be-revealed EcoSport.
Known internally as the B515, this next-generation EcoSport will be unveiled at the 2012 Auto Expo, followed by a launch in Brazil in the first few months of the year. The current EcoSport is quite popular in Brazil and since India has similar market dynamics to Brazil, Ford is hoping to replicate that success here.
The EcoSport is built on Ford’s award-winning, global compact car platform (B2E) developed in association with Mazda, which majors on weight saving and torsional rigidity. Ford wants to milk this platform as much as possible and hence a wide range of body styles will be spun off it. Apart from the saloon, there’s a hatchback version of the Fiesta (expected in India in the not-too-distant future), the EcoSport and finally a mini- MPV (code: B516) which could be called the B-max.
Though the EcoSport shares plenty of bits with the Fiesta saloon under the skin, it looks completely different, and you would be hard-pressed to tell that the two have anything in common. In fact, as per these illustrations, the new EcoSport could pass off as a proper soft-roader, but it’s nothing of the sort. This is in fact a sub-four-metre car with hatchback dimensions, and a tailgate-mounted spare wheel that sticks out past the four-metre mark. Small-car regulations don’t count the spare tyre in the length of a car and Ford has taken maximum advantage of this rule.
What is plainly clear is that this car definitely has SUV written all over it. The upright stance, the high bonnet, generous ground clearance and subtle cladding make you think off-roader, and what’s even better is that it is fresh, boldly designed and well proportioned, all at the same time. There’s an attractive and striking inverse ‘V’ in the nose, the chin has a pair of menacing intakes and the tipped-forward stance makes it look like an alert slip fielder, always ready for action. It looks great from the back as well, with its pillar-less rear windscreen and sharply cut tail-lights. Large wheels are a must for an SUV and the EcoSport for India could get 16 or even 17-inch wheels.
The Fiesta DNA will ensure that this car rides and handles very much unlike an SUV, and the tall stance and high ground clearance will be perfect for Indian roads. Just don’t expect acres of space on the inside, for the EcoSport will be only slightly roomier than the Fiesta, primarily because passengers are sat at a greater height off the floor.
To keep in line with the regs, Ford will use the new 90bhp, 1.5-litre DV5 diesel which debuted in the new Fiesta saloon. Ford may bump up the power of the engine to make this slightly heavier (and less aerodynamic) car perform better, and we expect the overall gearing to be shorter too. But don’t expect the power hike to be significant; the IB5 gearbox carried over from the Fiesta is not rated to handle much more torque, and this will serve as a limiting factor. Also, since the EcoSport will use the identical platform and running gear to the Fiesta, it will be front-wheel drive only, with no
4x4 option.
Introducing a petrol version, however, will be much more difficult. A 1.2-litre petrol motor, needed to comply with the small-car rules, would be too underpowered and a 1500 or 1600cc engine would attract a higher excise duty and also make it more expensive and less efficient. So we expect the petrol, if at all, will come only later, once the EcoSport has been well established in our market.
The EcoSport, which cleverly combines the charm of an SUV, the practicality of diesel, cutting-edge styling and a very affordable price tag somewhere in the region of Rs 7-9 lakh, has the makings of a winner. At that price, it will provide a genuine alternative to a midsize car and even a hatchback.
Though the Premier Rio is technically the first compact SUV in the market, the EcoSport will be the first serious player in this virgin niche. This could give Ford a big first-mover advantage in a segment that could explode. This could be the car to watch out for in 2012.
