Renault launched its Pulse

Renault launched its Pulse
Renault has launched the Pulse hatchback at the Auto Expo. This car is a mildly altered version of Nissan’s rather clever Micra.

Under the skin, the two are basically the same. They share the same lightweight V-platform chassis, the same basic suspension and the same gearbox, but unlike the Micra, the Pulse comes with only a Renault K9K 1.5-litre diesel engine that churns out 63bhp and 16.3kgm torque.

What Renault has altered however are the looks. While the basic architecture of the car - with its large arched roof and big cabin - remains, Renault has changed the nose dramatically. The front end is now much sharper-looking, with its raised, crisply styled lights, almost Hyundai-like hexagonal grille and a typical Renault matt-black centre section. The car has a much stronger chin than the Micra, the rear has been mildly altered and Renault says there could be an even sportier version of the car on the cards too. The interiors of the Pulse however are almost identical to those of the Micra, right down to colours and shades.

The Pulse gets an ARAI-certified fuel efficiency figure of 23.08kpl. Two trim levels are on offer. Also on offer is a unique 2+2 year 80,000km warranty and 24 hour roadside and navigation assistance.

The base RXL is priced at Rs 5.77 lakh and it comes with a manual A/C and a driver airbag.

The top-end RXZ is priced at Rs 6.25 lakh and it comes loaded with alloy wheels, automatic climate control, fog lamps and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, rear defoger with timer, roof spoiler dual airbags and a smart access key. RXZ also gets push button start.

The Pulse will be built at Renault-Nissan’s Chennai plant alongside the Micra.

renault pulse side view
Renault’s entry into India has been challenging to say the least. Its first offering, the Logan, was a rebadged version of Romanian brand Dacia’s low-cost saloon. It struggled here, and caused Indians to associate Renault with ‘budget’. The fact is the French brand has good equity in Europe, with a vast motorsport and road-car history that spans more than a century.

renault pulse interior view
Keen to properly establish the brand on our shores, Renault promptly handed over the Logan to Mahindra (you now know it as the Verito) and launched a premium product offensive this year with the Fluence executive saloon and the Koleos soft-roader. Of course, this is India, and we thrive on small, frugal hatchbacks, and Renault has been paying attention. So for its third model of the year, it has given us this, the Pulse.

As you can probably tell from the looks, the Renault Pulse is a Nissan Micra; there’s no escaping the fact. Renault-Nissan’s research told them that the general consensus among the car-buying public was the Micra looked too cute, and this was putting a lot of potential male customers off. So to kill two birds with one stone, the Alliance cleverly rebadged the Micra as a Renault, saving on development costs and simultaneously appealing to a whole different kind of customer.

renault pulse rear view
The Pulse sports a large, aggressive grille which gives it a purposeful stance. The rear bumper features a blacked-out section that mimics a diffuser and the hatch has a pair of sharp creases running symmetrically across, converging on a massive Renault ‘lozenge’ logo.

The Pulse is powered by the familiar Renault-Nissan 1.2-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engines, the latter of which we’re testing here. It produces a modest 63bhp and 16.3kgm and on urban roads, is immediately impressive. Initial engine response is good and there’s very little turbo lag. Half-throttle responses are also good and the Pulse ambles along at low speeds rather well. Mid-range performance is healthy and you have adequate passing power on tap. It’s only on the highway that you feel the lack of power and you have to constantly shift gears to keep the motor on the boil. With power tapering off as early as 3800rpm, you have a very small powerband to play with and the Pulse’s performance is a far cry from the likes of the Swift. Our timing equipment confirms this — the car takes a leisurely 16.2 seconds to reach 100kph. The motor is quite refined though; it settles into quiet idle and only sounds gruff when worked hard.

renault pulse front view
What is also very impressive is the Pulse’s ride quality. It competently absorbs rough sections and bad roads thanks to its pliant suspension and tyres. There’s very little bobbing, the suspension works silently and this allows you to drive over rough patches without a care.

Straightline stability is surprisingly impressive. Due to the soft suspension, there is some body roll but the baby Renault is a very neat handler. The steering is really light and comfortable at city speeds and it offers decent feedback on the highway too.

Interior design is exactly the same as the Micra’s and the oval and rounded theme is carried over. You get a round cluster of buttons on the central console, round vents and a round steering boss. There is good amount of space for odds and ends and the door pockets are of a decent size. At the back, headroom and legroom are surprisingly generous and you also get adjustable rear headrests. The only grouse we have with the rear seat is that it’s too low and flat, with not enough under-thigh support. The boot too is fairly generous and the seats fold down, but there’s no split.

The top-end RxZ model we’re driving comes loaded with features, with the notable absence of a passenger airbag, which we would have liked at this price. It also eschews a traditional key for a smart fob and a starter button. Renault also offers climate control and electrically folding mirrors on higher variants. The interior quality isn’t brilliant but it’s good enough for the class.

The Pulse is a very well rounded package and its striking exterior design could win hearts too. It rides and handles well, the torquey motor makes it extremely easy to drive and the spacious and practical interiors just add to the overall package. If they price it right, the Pulse may be the key to making Renault a household name in India.

Renault reveals all-new Pulse hatchback

Renault reveals all-new Pulse hatchback Renault took a big step towards becoming a serious player in the small car market by revealing it's all new hatchback for India. Known as the Pulse, this car is basically a mildly altered version of Nissan's rather clever Micra.
Under the skin, the two are basically the same. They share the same lightweight  V platform chassis, the same basic suspension, the same gearbox and the same set if engines as well. These include a 1.2 three cylinder petrol and a 1.5 turbo diesel.
What Renault has altered however are the looks. While the basic architecture of the car, with it's large arched roof and big cabin, remains Renault has changed the nose dramatically. The front end is now much sharper looking, with its raised crisply styled lights, almost Hyundai like hexagonal grille and a typical Renault matt black center section.  The car has a much stronger chin than the Micra, the rear has been mildly altered and Renault say there could be an even sportier version of the car on the cards too. The interiors of the Pulse however are almost identical to those of the Micra, right down to colours and shades.
The Pulse (codename: B58)  will be the French car maker’s third offering in six months; the Fluence saloon and Koleos SUV being the earlier two. The Pulse will be built at Renault-Nissan’s Chennai plant alongside the Micra and Renault are expected to price it at a slight premium over the Nissan. One of the  big seling-points of the Pulse will be a unique 2+2 year warranty that will be offered on the Pulse.

Renault Pulse to be revealed on October 29

Renault Pulse to be revealed on October 29Renault is all-set to unveil the Pulse compact car for India, on 29th October 2011.
The Pulse (codename: B58)  will be the French car maker’s third offering in six months; the Fluence saloon and Koleos SUV being the earlier two.
The Pulse is based on Renault-Nissan alliance’s V-platform that also underpins Nissan’s Micra hatchback and Sunny saloon and will be built at Renault-Nissan’s Chennai plant alongside the Micra.
The Pulse’s dimensions will be near-identical to the Micra and likewise should weigh less than a tonne which will reap huge dividends in the terms of fuel.  While the two cars will share many components including engines namely the 1.2 litre petrol and the 1.5 litre diesel, the Pulse will be easily identifiable as a Renault and willlook different from the Micra. The nose, headlights and grill will be very different and so will the shape of the rear hatch and tail lights included However, the two cars could share the dashboard design as tooling for a new dashboard entails considerable expense.
Apart from the Micra itself, the Pulse will compete with the likes of the Maruti Wagon R, Hyundai i10, Honda Brio and Maruti Swift and will be priced around Rs 4-5 lakh.

Renault Koleos review, test drive

The face-lifted Renault Koleos made its world debut in India on September 8th, pipping the official launch in China by a few days. To be first in the world may not be of much significance to Indian customers but its a statement by the French car maker on the importance of the Indian market. With the Koleos, Renault wants to take its brand further upmarket with its fully loaded SUV but is it up to the job? A long drive from Bengaluru into the forest of Karnataka reveals the answers.
The styling changes with the face-lift have yielded a smarter,

Renault Launches Koleos SUV

The Renault Koleos SUV has arrived at our shores. Priced at Rs 22.99 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), this SUV is powered by a 2.0-litre, 150bhp, all-aluminium common-rail diesel engine with variable valve timing. This is the same M9R unit that powers the X-Trail, coupled with a six-speed automatic transmission. This diesel motor, like in the X-trail, is quite rev-happy and packs in loads of punch once you cross 2000rpm.
We drove the Koleos in Europe last year and found it a capable and luxurious SUV; the interior fit and finish is not upto German standards, but there’s a solidity to the interiors that is a cut above its Korean peers. The plastics are hardwearing, the switchgear feels solid and the vents don’t flap around. The trim feels tightly screwed down and hence rattles are unlikely to creep in, which bodes well for extended use.
The Koleos comes loaded with 17-inch alloy wheels, a split tail-gate, cruise control, tray tables behind front seats, a Bose sound system with Bluetooth, steering-mounted audio controls, six airbags and a five-year, 10,000km anti-rust warranty.
