Testing a mainstream production saloon on a Formula 1 race track doesn’t serve any real purpose except to tell you how quick you (and the car) really are.
New BMW X3 Review, Test Drive
As one would expect, there’s more than a bit of the X5 in the X3’s details. The kidney grille looks very similar, the heavy looking bumper is there on this car too and look at it from the rear and you’ll swear this is BMW’s full-sized SUV. The new X3’s footprint is actually almost the same as the original X5 – BMW’s iconic first SUV – which means this car is both longer and wider than the outgoing X3. But the increase in size hasn’t brought a corresponding increase in mass. This new car actually weighs 15kg less than the earlier car with the same specification.
The X3 is actually based on the estate or Touring version of the 3-series, and so what you get is a monocoque or ‘frame-in-body’ construction, a longitudinally placed engine in the nose and independent car-like suspension for all four wheels. X in BMW terminology stands for four-wheel drive, and this car uses an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch to distribute torque between front and rear axles. To improve efficiency, this version comes with auto start-stop that switches the car off at signals, and this BMW, like recent examples, comes with an electric steering for greater efficiency too.
On the road, a heavy 1.8-tonne kerb weight, an upright SUV stance and a two-litre 181bhp diesel don’t exactly spell performance. But generous torque from the motor and the presence of the eight-speed gearbox improve things considerably. There is considerable grunt in the midrange, the gearbox is quick to downshift, and this allows it to keep up with traffic quite easily.
However, the X3 lacks the ability to suddenly up the pace at these speeds. The motor constantly has to work hard and performance is only really good in the midrange. Stability at speed is far more impressive. The X3 tracks faithfully even at very high speeds, there is absolutely no hint of nervousness and the BMW feels glued to the road even at speeds in excess of 180kph. A light but firm touch is all you need on the wheel, there is no sloppiness in the way the X3 changes lanes, and the brakes have plenty of bite and stopping power as well. The X3 is also well insulated and feels quite refined at speed. There is very little tyre roar, the car rides silently over expansion joints.
In fact so silent is the rest of the car, you sometimes hear wind swishing over the mirror and the ‘A’ pillar.
On smaller roads I decide to switch back to ‘Normal’ mode to soften the dampers. And the effect is immediate. Despite having large 18-inch wheels, the X3 simply glides over many of the rough patches and holding onto a particular line is no problem either. The X3 also feels easy to punt around and navigate through the centre of some small towns. The light, electric steering and compact dimensions of the car make it quite easy to thread through narrow cobblestone streets and parking with the electronic driver aids is quite easy too.
In ‘Sport’ mode, the dampers firm up nicely and body control is much tighter and the steering feels weightier too. Unfortunately, this feels a bit artificial and odd and I miss the light but very precise feel of the system in Normal.
On smaller roads, the X3 also feels substantially quicker than out on the open roads. Performance for these roads is more than adequate and using the strong mid-range delivers a decent kick. You do need to place the gearbox into S if you want to drive in a spirited manner though. This motor doesn’t have the strongest bottom end and looking for performance when the eight-speed ’box is shifting up as often as it can for greater efficiency does get a bit frustrating.
What’s vastly improved however are the interiors of the X3. This one feels as big and as airy as Audi’s Q5 on the inside. The width of the cabin is impressive, the wide dashboard makes this feel like a full-sized SUV and BMW has used first-rate materials too. The design of the soft-feel dash is full of attractive curves and swoops, a smart looking metallic strip has been used on the bottom of the central console and this and other metallic insets help lift the mood of the cabin.
The instrument panel is nearly identical to that of a 5-series, the air-con and audio system controls are like the 3-series, and the seats are identical to the 3-series as well. BMW has used sumptuous double-stitched leather to cloak the insides, door pads included, and you get the full bells and whistles iDrive too. Also on this car, is BMW’s Dynamic Drive Control that allows you to toggle between Normal, Sport and Sport + at the touch of a button.
At the rear, you sit a bit low but legroom is surprisingly good and the backrest is very supportive too. The seats can be folded and flipped for additional luggage space but with the standard 550 litres available, we doubt you’ll ever feel the need to make use of this feature.
The new X3 is on much more solid ground than the outgoing model. It is more spacious on the inside, is both beautifully crafted and built, and it looks larger on the outside too. It may not be as much fun to drive as the earlier car and performance from the 2.0 motor isn’t spectacular either. But the new X3 delivers almost everything Indian luxury SUV buyers seem to be looking for. This really does feel like a slightly scaled-down version of BMW’s bigger X5. All BMW needs to do now is deliver this SUV at a competitive price, from somewhere around Rs 40 lakh, and watch the order books fill up.
BMW Unveils Mobility Of The Future
The BMW Group has showcased its visions of future mobility in the shape of the i3 Concept and i8 Concept studies. These concept vehicles provide a glimpse of the first electrically powered production cars from the new BMW i sub-brand, due to be launched as the BMW i3 in 2013 and the BMW i8 in 2014.
“We are marking another milestone in the history of the BMW Group. As chairman of the Board and an engineer myself, I am very proud of this project,” declared Norbert Reithofer, chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, at the premiere of the two vehicles in Frankfurt on July 29. “As the world’s leading premium car manufacturer, our aim is to offer customers purpose-built electric-drive cars as well,” he added.
With its zero-emission electric drive and a range of approximately 150km, the i3 Concept has been specifically developed for use in an urban environment; its dynamic 125 kW electric motor and rear-wheel drive ensuring BMW-style dynamic handling. Thanks to its innovative LifeDrive architecture featuring a carbon passenger cell, the i3 Concept combines an extremely low weight of 1250kg with optimal interior space and the highest crash safety levels. With four seats and a 200-litre luggage compartment, this vehicle is fully suited for everyday use.

The application of this new CFRP technology allows a weight reduction, compared to a conventional electric car, of between 250 and 350kg, and that means more dynamic handling coupled with a greater range. The BMW i3 does the 0 to 100kph sprint in less than eight seconds, while a high-speed charger achieves an 80 percent battery charge in just an hour.
Thanks to the emission-free drivetrain and a value added chain designed to be sustainable all along the line, lifecycle emission figures for the i3 are at least a third lower than for a highly efficient combustion-engine car. If the i3 is run on electricity from renewable sources, the figures improve by well over 50 percent.

The sports car has an electronically governed top speed of 250kph and space for up to four occupants.

In addition to purpose-built premium vehicles with electric drive, the company is also offering intelligent mobility services.
Both the i3 and the i8 will be built at BMWs Leipzig plant in Germany. Some 400 million euros are earmarked for investment in new buildings and facilities by 2013, while 800 new jobs are to be created. Vehicle production will be CO2 neutral and will draw on renewable resources. The company is currently investigating the possibility of erecting its own wind turbines on the plant site

New spy pictures of Hyundai HA
We’ve got our hands on another spy picture of the Hyundai HA, this time with fewer covers as compared to the cars spotted earlier. The test mule was spotted by our alert reader Roshan Vignesh being tested near Chennai.
Its evident from the pictures that the HA carries a cab-forward stance, similar to the i10. And considering its strong shoulder line and the severely raked A- and C-pillars, it suggests that this baby Hyundai will be a recipient of the company’s ‘Fluidic Sculpture’ design language, which is full of sharp cuts.
With the HA, Hyundai is aiming at stealing some of the Nano’s thunder by pricing it in the range of Rs 2-3lakh. At this price point, it will be able to compete with the top-end versions of the Nano and scaled down and slashed products from Maruti as well.
The HA will be based on a pared-down Santro platform, which already costs Hyundai very little and the company will leverage its already fully localised powertrain as well. The motor that powers the car will be an 814cc three-cylinder version of the Epsilon engine in the Santro, developing approximately 48bhp, and Hyundai will carry over other bits and pieces from the Santro too.
Hyundai knows how to build quality products that are well engineered, well suited to Indian conditions, deliver very good fuel economy and the company is at the top of the game as far as parts and service are concerned too.
Expect Hyundai’s all-new small car, the HA to be launched towards the end of 2011 or early 2012.
Red Bull to enter road car market
Formula 1 team Red Bull Racing wants to be recognised as a serious engineering firm away from the racetrack, and will use its recent tie-up with Infiniti to move into road car development.
RBR boss Christian Horner told Autocar he wants to “use Red Bull’s expertise outside F1”. Horner said, “Red Bull used to be known only as an energy drink company, but now it is recognised as an engineering team. It’s a natural evolution for us to get involved in road car engineering.”
Chief among the Infiniti/RBR plans is a co-developed sports model in the mould of the Renault Clio Williams, although Nissan’s luxury arm has not yet disclosed which car will receive this treatment. Infiniti insiders are already suggesting brand awareness is rising because of the F1 tie-up, which has been aided by hiring RBR driver Sebastian Vettel as a company ambassador.
Infiniti’s European plans away from its RBR alliance include two new model lines, four-cylinder engine options and more hybrid cars. The new models include a crossover in the Ford Focus class inspired by Infiniti’s Etherea concept and a Nissan Leaf-based electric car with a greater range and improved performance.
The Renault-Nissan union with Daimler will yield Infiniti four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, while the brand will also extend its hybrid offerings, some developed in-house, others with Mercedes-Benz.
Audi launches A8 L W12 Quattro
Audi India launches the most powerful version of its flagship, the A8 L W12 Quattro. Powered by a 6.3-litre FSI petrol motor, this top of the line variant develops 500bhp and 63.73kgm of torque.
To distinguish the new W12 from rest of the A8s, this high-end variant gets single-frame radiator grille with a touch of high gloss black paint finish and special chromed horizontal bars along with chrome inserts on the air inlets and exterior mirrors. The exhaust system has two trapezoidal-pattern tailpipe trims neatly integrated into the rear bumper. The A8 L W12 quattro comes with LED headlamps as a standard fitment.
The new A8 L offers both luxurious ride comfort and sporty handling. It is once again, based on a virtually all-aluminum body/chassis structure, which combines high strength with relatively light weight (for its size).
The W12 sprints from 0 to 100kph in only 4.7 seconds and effortlessly reaches to its limited top speed of 250kph. The power is transmitted through eight-speed tiptronic gearbox. Gear shifts are performed electronically from an elegant yacht-style selector lever or at steering wheel paddles. The A8 L W12 quattro runs on 255/45 section tyres and gets 19-inch alloy wheels with a 15-spoke design reserved for this model.
Speaking on the occasion, Michael Perschke, head, Audi India said, “The addition of this powerful engine to the Audi A8 L range in India will further consolidate our position in the limousine segment. I am confident that all new Audi A8 L W12 will raise the bar and set new standards for luxury and engineering performance in India.”
The new Audi A8 is now available in three variants; a 4.2-litre FSi motor, a 3.0-litre TDi and now the 500bhp 6.3-litre W12 petrol variant. The 4.2-litre V8 TDI variant – the same engine that made the A8 a popular choice in the foreign markets – will also make its way to India by early 2012.
The new Audi A8 L W12 carries a price tag of Rs 1.26 crore (ex showroom Maharashtra).
New Honda CR-V 2012 official pics
Here is the first official picture of Honda’s all-new CRV concept. The Honda concept SUV uses an all-new platform that will feature on the production car. The concept features a series of styling changes over the current CR-V designed to give the SUV a more aggressive stance.
The most prominent changes are at the front, where the CR-V features a wraparound lower front bumper that is better integrated into the rest of the front fascia than on the current car. The three-bar horizontal front grille is also much more dominant than the current CR-V’s, with slimmed-down headlights flanking it on either side. Honda claims the front-end styling changes result in much improved aerodynamics over the current car.
Heavily sculpted bodywork features on the sides, which also get more pronounced side sills. The concept also gets new alloy wheels. At the rear, the CR-V will retain the vertical light design of the current car, although no image has been released by Honda to show the rear styling. The Japanese firm is also claiming an all-new, more spacious interior with a lower floor for improved load-carrying ability.
Honda has confirmed no engine details at this stage, although improved efficiency and fuel economy is promised. The current CR-V is available with 2.0-litre and 2.4-litre petrol engines, developing 143bhp and 161bhp respectively.
The 2012 Honda CRV concept is not destined for the Frankfurt motor show in September, instead will be making its motor show debut at the Orange County International Auto Show in California in the same month.
Mercedes C63 AMG Black Series revealed
Mercedes reveals its most powerful C-Class — the 509bhp Mercedes C63 AMG Coupé Black Series.
Like all three previous Black Series Mercedes, the C63 sticks with a tried and tested formula of sledgehammer power, track-focused hard-core chassis and aggressive race-derived styling. Power comes from AMG’s 6.3-litre naturally aspirated V8 engine, which has forged pistons, conrods and crankshaft, a new engine control unit and a 50 per cent bigger oil cooler.
The prodigious output is channelled through a seven-speed AMG Speedshift transmission, which uses a wet, dual-clutch in place of the usual fluid coupling. The transmission has four control settings and can snap through the gears in 100 milliseconds in the sportiest Sport Plus and Manual modes.
To boost the new Mercedes’ traction and improve its handling the rear axle features a limited slip differential that is allied to three stages of ESP stability control, one of which allows the system to be completely switched off.
Under the skin is a revised chassis with wider tracks — up 40mm at the front and 75mm at the rear — stiffer anti-roll bars and suspension with “numerous setting options”. Upgraded brakes include bigger 390mm front discs, stopped by six-piston calipers, and 360mm discs at the rear, with four-piston calipers.
A two-seat cabin is standard, with an optional rear bench with individual seats, like the ‘cooking’ C63 AMG Coupé. Race-style bucket seats and red-trimmed seatbelts with contrasting stitching add a sporty edge to the interior.
Firsts for the Black Series are an optional Track Package and the AMG Aerodynamic Package. Included in the Track Package is super-sticky Dunlop rubber and a differential cooler sited in the rear bumper apron. The Aerodynamic Package features carbonfibre aerodynamic add-ons for the front bumper and a fixed, carbon rear spoiler.
The Mercedes C63 AMG Black Series will go on sale in the first quarter of 2012.
New 2012 Innova revealed
As seen from the pictures, Toyota has given its brilliant people mover a major facelift, with new lights and a new grille and the profile has been altered a bit as well. The upright grille sits more vertically than the current car and this means the bonnet looks less van like. The new headlights have been stretched over the fenders, and the fogs and chin are new as well. It also gets new alloy wheels. The styling updates at the rear include a new bumper, re-styled number-plate housing and re-profiled tail lamps.
As seen from the pictures, there are minor tweaks to the interiors, the manual A/C controls get bigger knobs and the centre console gets a wood-trim surround, and there is an all-new steering wheel which seems to be borrowed from the Corolla Altis.
While the pictures are from a petrol version which will be sold in the Indonesian market, we don’t expect any change to the current 2.5 common rail diesel motor on duty in our market. However, it could be updated and deliver more power and torque.
What remains to be seen however with this car is wether Toyota maintains the current price line. The Innova has easily seen off many recent threats from competitors and with no creditable rivals in sight,
Toyota may just take the opportunity to stretch the margin on this car when they launch it sometime in the middle of 2012.
Chevrolet launches Beat Diesel
Chevrolet has launched the diesel version of its Beat hatchback.
The base PS version starts at Rs 4.29 lakh, and the next variant, LS, is priced at Rs 4.59 lakh. The LT is priced at Rs 4.99 lakh and the top-end LT with option pack is priced at Rs 5.45 lakh.
In comparison, the Ford Figo diesel starts at Rs 4.58 lakh for the base variant. The EXI is priced at Rs 4.93 lakh while the ZXI costs Rs 5.17 lakh, and the top-end Titanium costs Rs 5.49 lakh. All prices are ex-showroom Delhi.
The Beat diesel is powered by a 1.0XSDE Smartech engine. It is a three-cylinder version of the famous Multijet diesel unit that was co-developed by GM and FiatSCOOP! New Maruti 800
Maruti has been secretly working on the 800’s replacement and these exclusive spy pics show what the new Maruti 800 will look like. Like the current 800, this all-new car will slot in below the Alto and is in fact based on the existing Alto platform. The 800 will be powered by the same 796cc three-cylinder motor (F8D) from the Alto which has been modified to meet the latest emission norms. The new 800 is expected to have all-new interiors and will be a little bit more spacious than before.
Maruti is targeting a sub-Rs 2-lakh price for the new Maruti 800 to distance it from the Alto by at least Rs 40,000 and put it smack into Nano territory.

EXCLUSIVE! Chevrolet Cruze to get upgrades
The Chevrolet Cruze is slated to get a new engine from GM’s Family of Z series engines.
The new, 2.0-litre DOHC common-rail diesel engine, which puts out a powerful 163bhp (up from 150bhp) and even more torque, promises to keep the Cruze safely on the top of the performance diesel pedestal. Expect minor cosmetic upgrades too.
GM India, based on customer feedback, is also redesigning the rear seats to improved headroom. The enhanced Cruze is expected to be in showrooms later this year.

New Swift Coming August 17
Maruti Suzuki India (MSIL) is all-set to launch the much-anticipated all-new Swift on August 17.
The company has also released a teaser website for its all-new Swift and has revealed that all customers who have booked the Swift will now get the all-new model instead. However there will be an incremental cost over the outgoing model.
The all-new Swift looks quite similar in terms of styling to the outgoing model but is in fact built on an all-new platform, each body panel is new and the car is bigger than its predecessor in every dimension. The interior gets some styling cues from the larger Kizashi saloon, particularly in
its centre console. The new Swift, like the outgoing model, is expected to spawn a saloon variant as well.
Engine options are likely to be carried over from the outgoing model, however according to Maruti there will be VVT (Variable Valve Timing) on some models. The petrol will be powered by a 1.2-litre, 84bhp K-series motor while the diesel engine will be a 1.3-litre unit sourced from Fiat.
There will also be a new top-end model in the diesel variant called ZDi.
Toyota Fortuner facelift unveiled
Toyota has launched a refreshed version of its Fortuner SUV at a ceremony in Bangkok. The refreshed SUV has been launched for the Thailand market and the same could make it to India in early 2012.
The refreshed Fortuner has an all-new nose designed to appear wider and more aggressive. It has new headlamps that are slightly stretched, a restyled and sculpted bonnet with a larger scoop for the air-intake, a re-profiled bumper and a wider redesigned chrome grille that makes it resemble the Land Cruiser. The Fortuner gets new seats and darker wooden trim.
Toyota hasn’t changed the SUV’s side profile but the rear now gets new clear-lens tail-lamps that have a different profile from the current ones. The roof-rack and scuff plate, as seen in the picture, however, are likely to be optional, which may or may not come with this updated version.
The current Fortuner is powered by a 3.0-litre common-rail diesel motor that churns out a respectable 169bhp. This is the same motor that does duty in the Land Cruiser Prado as well, although the Prado gets more torque. The Fortuner may be given this step up as well for India. An automatic version is also likely.
Toyota has developed a latest “Diamond Tech” system that allows the 32-bit ECU to more precisely detect operating conditions within the injection system, improving fuel efficiency. New injectors feature a new “diamond-like” carbon coating that makes the process more efficient, as well as lengthening the life of the injectors and related combustion process components. The variable-geometry turbo also sees its relationship with the ECU improved, for a faster flow of more detailed information.
Toyota plans to increase the local content on the Fortuner and this facelift may provide the perfect opportunity.
Brabus 371kph E-class Cabriolet
Brabus has launched the Brabus E V12 cabriolet, the “world’s most powerful and fastest four-seater cabrio,” according to the firm. Based on the Mercedes E-Class Cabriolet, the power the new car comes courtesy of a heavily revised V12 engine from the Mercedes S 600, featuring bigger turbochargers, a longer stroke, larger pistons and increased cylinder bore.
Power is up to 788bhp with 112.12 kgm of torque, giving the Brabus E V12 cabriolet a claimed top speed of 371 kph and a 0-100kph time of just 3.7sec. Other features of the hardcore open E-class include a high-performance limited-slip differential, a wider body and track compared with the standard car and a front splitter with integrated LED daytime running lights for an “unmistakable appearance”.
The suspension has been developed together with Bilstein to provide a wider range of individual suspension settings. To reign in the car’s power, vented and grooved steel brake discs and 12-piston aluminium calipers feature at the front, with six-piston aluminum fixed calipers at the rear.
Mechanicals aside, the interior “breaks the mold in this area as well”. Carbonfibre has been used on the dash, centre console and side trim and the seats are finished in a combination of ‘lipstic red’ and black leather.
The Brabus E V12 cabriolet is built to order starting from Rs 2.65 crore.
Maruti's highest-altitude workshop
Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL) has added another service workshop to its network but this time, it has opened India’s highest altitude car workshop. Situated at an altitude of 3,740 metres, the workshop is located at Kaza in the Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh.
The service center at Kaza would cover areas like Kibber, Hanse, Losar, and Keylong and will have a servicing pool of about 780 vehicles. The service centre will cover surrounding areas such as Rangnik, Kibber, Hanse and Losar to Keylong. It will service a pool of around 700 vehicles. Maruti has another workshop which is located at a high-altitude of 3,505 metres at Leh. Maruti currently has 2992 workshops in India spread over 1406 cities.

Outlandish naked bikes which flaunt their massive exposed engines ooze a raw and untamed energy. They dare riders to hop on and tame them and make a popular choice to pop about town astride, or blast around on a weekend. The K1300R from BMW stretches the envelope a fair margin to make the statement bolder, faster and a lot more addictive.
The K1300R’s demeanor suggests functional, industrial design and intense strength. The tank stretches forward from the rider seat like a muscled chest, with extensions jutting all the way up to the front headlights. The industrial look is emphasized by BMW's Duolever front suspension.
There's no shortage of design detail to help the K1300R’s brutish look. Up ahead, a small screen offers the rider marginal wind deflection, though it does manage to protect the instruments. A big analogue unit displays speed while a digital display displays gear position, time and the odometer. Above these sits a small analogue tachometer. Palm grips, control levers and the switches are solidly built.
Stealth-fighter like creases and lines on the small engine fairing, the exposed engine leaning forward by 55 degrees, a purposeful and solid looking shaft-drive and that Paralever rear setup are all stunning. The hollowed out hub for the 180/55 section rear tyre and rim look a treat too. Another nifty touch is an exposed frame rear section, that’s also covered by the pillions seat.
The 1293cc four cyclinder motor packs 173bhp of raw punch, as well as solid pulling power, with 14.2kgm of torque. The K1300R certainly feels quick, with sharp throttle response. There’s a relentless surge of power like a freight-train, surging all the way up unto redline. Optional Anti-Spin Control system helps keep you in control. Push the K1300R hard and it sounds nice, especially at redline where it emits a shriek.
The big Beemer’s trump card is the unruffled manner with which it delivers performance. The inclined, in-line four feels tractable, and you can ride this bike in traffic in fourth, even fifth gear. The gearbox is one of the smoothest, but finding neutral occasionally takes a bit of effort.
Overall refinement is of a high standard, and you could even compare this motorcycle with BMW's far more expensive luxury cars. Its relaxed and effortless air means this bruiser bike can zap distances in a manner to make the rider think he is being teleported.
The K1300R's handlebars are wide, offering a relaxed seating position. The gently contoured seat is wide, soft and cushy. There’s little load on your wrists and the riding position is spot-on, sporty, also comfortable. This is no light weight boxer, however, the separation of steering and suspension via Duolever results in an incredibly crisp steering. Combined with the soft saddle, the suspension never allows the road to intrude on your riding pleasure.
A light steering makes it easy to weave through traffic. However, up the pace and attack corners and you need to re-calibrate cornering inputs. The K1300R turns in lightning quick, responding to rider inputs with alacrity. Once figured, the Beemer instills confidence, happy to slice through and power out of corners. This naked bike also sheds pace with confidence, the ABS safety net letting you haul in the levers without much worry.
The K1300R offers outlandish form, ease of use and copious power, every time out. It also has the ability to transcend the world of motorcycles, with fluid handling, a butter smooth engine and an impeccable air of quality. 2011 Suzuki Swift
When the all-new Swift goes on sale around May this year, you can foresee the tough time Maruti is going to have explaining to customers that it is actually new. You need to stare long and hard to spot the differences in the next-generation Swift, which looks remarkably like the old one.
The new Swift may look more or less unchanged, but is in fact built on an all-new platform and every body panel is new. It’s grown considerably too and the new Swift is bigger than its predecessor in every dimension. Though the width and height have increased only marginally, length is up by 90mm and the wheelbase has been stretched too by a very useful 50mm.
The Swift looks very modern and fresh despite the familiarity of its shape. The new Swift looks even better with subtle tweaking of the design. The nose is characterised by the same swept-back lights but they are much larger and extend further back into the body. Again, the new grille is remarkably similar to the old car’s but subtly cuts into the leading edge of the bonnet.
The front intake is more prominent, the bumpers are a bit more sharply cut and the fog lamp surrounds are more contoured. Move to the side and the changes include bigger and more bulging wheel arches while the familiar blackened A-pillar contrasts nicely with the body. The rear tail-lamps stretch further along the length of the car and come with clear inset panels, which differentiates them from the all-red clusters of the original Swift.
The most noticeable change perhaps is in the tailgate, which has a distinctive overhang above the number plate. The boot’s higher loading lip adds to the car’s structural rigidity, increased significantly, and this is mainly due to the extensive use of high-tensile steel.
The new Swift sticks to the tried and tested format of MacPherson struts up front and a torsion beam rear, but the design has been tweaked for better dynamics. Under the bonnet not much has changed, and the new Swift will come with the same 1.2 K-series petrol and 1.3 Fiat-sourced diesel motors as before. There are some small tweaks though. For example, the radiator’s cooling shroud is now made of plastic instead of steel and this has knocked 1.5kg of weight.
The benefits of the additional 50mm in the Swift’s wheelbase can be seen in the cabin. Rear seat space or a lack of it has always been one of the Swift’s weak points and this has now been addressed to some extent. Legroom has noticeably improved and a more generous seat squab offers much better under-thigh support. However, even with the increase in rear passenger room, the new Swift fails to feel as spacious as its competitors.
Headroom is still tight, the small glass area continuing to give a cooped-up feeling at the back. At 204-litres, boot space isn’t generous either.
The front seats are very generous and have a sportier design with more contours and strong side bolsters, but we prefer the flatter and softer design of the current Swift’s front buckets, which are among the comfiest around.
Suzuki hasn’t managed to lift cabin quality substantially with the new Swift. The plastics don’t feel greatly improved and the all-black insides, relieved only marginally with the use of silver plastic trim, continue to exude a gloomy ambience as before. However, with Indian customers showing a strong preference for beige interiors, we wouldn’t be surprised if Maruti offered a lighter, more cheerful interior trim for the Indian market.
The dashboard design is much tidier and sharper looking. The V-shaped centre console is a design theme that’s also present in the Kizashi and works well. The new instrument dials are superb with increments highlighted by red-lit, glass-like markers as on the Honda City. The dashboard is quite functional too, offering more storage space than before.
The all-new steering wheel feels nice and chunky as do the steering-mounted buttons which have a nice tactile feel. A lot of the switchgear is new and feels a lot better but some parts still get carried over like the power window cluster and some buttons on the lower dash. The gear lever as well is all too familiar and a carry-over from previous Suzukis.
The UK-spec Swift comes with a keyless stop-start system and we expect Maruti to offer this same feature in India to counter the Nissan Micra’s claim of being the only car in the class to come with this convenience. We wouldn’t be surprised if a USB input and Bluetooth connectivity are also added to the Swift’s roster of kit.
Fire-up the engine and it becomes immediately apparent that the Swift is a much better car to drive. It feels more grown up but without losing its innate entertaining character. The first impression is that it feels more refined than before, if not quicker. It’s a lot quieter, the body seems less creaky and the K-series shows no signs of harshness even when revved to its max.
That’s a good thing actually because low-end torque is pretty weak and you really need to cane this engine to perform. It works best after 4,000rpm and whizzes to its 6,200rpm redline without any fuss. This is one of the smoothest and most refined 1.2-litre units around and is sure to continue delighting enthusiasts. Performance is more than adequate and in fact, after the Honda Jazz, it’s the Swift that is the quickest hatchback in its class.
However, for everyday driving, the lack of grunt at low speeds will mean more frequent gear changing than you expect. That job is made less of a chore thanks to the sweet-shifting gearbox which is again a carry-over from the previous Swift.
The Swift’s grown-up feel comes largely from the substantially improved ride and handling. It feels much more planted and less fidgety than before, cruising at high speeds with a new-found air of confidence. It’s less prone to getting tossed around and soaks up bumps very impressively.
The best bit is that the Swift hasn’t lost its perky handling in its new avatar. The steering has been completely revamped with low-play joints in the steering-column shaft and a new variable-gear ratio design. However, Suzuki still hasn’t managed to get rid of the inconsistency in the steering feel, which is a big fly in the ointment.
According to company sources, Maruti plans to launch the all-new Swift in May this year, which is exactly six years after the launch of the first model. The new Swift addresses many of the flaws of the old model while still retaining its very desirable character. It’s bigger and better in every respect but we can’t help feeling that Suzuki could have made more of a jump in key areas like cabin quality and space.
There is little doubt though that it will remain the benchmark in this segment for others to follow and on the assumption that Maruti will price this all-important hatchback very competitively, the new Swift will begin life in the Indian market where the previous one left off. Right at the top.

Honda Rejigs Pricing Strategy
Honda, over the past month, has made some surprising moves. The brand, which otherwise commands a premium, sharply reduced the prices of its bestselling City and the premium hatchback Jazz. On June 14, the carmaker announced ‘new prices’ for the City, slashing the price tag by Rs 44,000 for the top-end version to Rs 66,000 on the entry level one.
The growing sales of new rivals like the VW Vento and Hyundai’s new Verna have clearly driven this uncharacteristic move on Honda’s part. But the Japanese carmaker says that the price revision is due to the increased localisation level in the City. According to Jnaneswar Sen, senior vice-president – Sales and Marketing, Honda Siel Cars India, “Our R&D function in India started working on localisation and cost down activities for our volume models from 2009. In anticipation of bigger volumes resulting in economies of scale from the second half of the current year, we have achieved considerable cost reduction and are happy to pass on the benefit to the customers with immediate effect." An industry source said that with the development of a local vendor base for the Brio, Honda has managed to increase local content for the City too.
Honda’s decision to revise the City’s prices comes within months of the car losing the top slot in the segment to Volkswagen’s Vento. The German competitor, thanks to the option of a diesel variant, sold 15,098 units as against 14,870 units of the City during the January to May period. The absence of a diesel variant and the reduction in production level due to the earthquake in Japan has also hit Honda hard.
The Jazz, which has been a slow starter so far, is also a beneficiary from Honda’s latest retail strategy. Honda sold sold 1,413 units during January to May, as against 1,837 units during the same period last year. The Jazz’s price has been cut by around Rs 150,000 under a ‘limited period’ offer. Unlike the City, this is not a ‘new price’ but a sales scheme. Dealers say the strategy has worked well. “Almost all the cars we had with us have been sold off, thanks to the offer,” says a Mumbai-based dealer.
With these unprecedented price cuts by Honda, could there be an adverse impact in the Japanese major’s brand equity? “Perhaps not,” says a leading brand consultant. “The brand equity remains intact if the price cut is to counter a strong competitor and without any compromise on quality.” Well, with Volkswagen and Hyundai as competitors, Honda’s price-cutting move may not dilute its brand equity. Instead, it has definitely brought in more customers to its showrooms.
Beat diesel coming next month
GM India expects the Beat Diesel to be a game-changer for the company and the Indian market when it goes on sale this month. The baby Chevy will be the first diesel in its class, which could give it a first-mover advantage in the A-segment which forms the bulk of the market.
In fact, the Beat Diesel is all set to notch up a series of ‘firsts.’ It is the first three-cylinder diesel engine in India, the first diesel under one litre and, according to company sources, has the best ‘torque-per-litre’ and ‘bhp-per-litre’ figures in the industry.
It produces a respectable 58.5bhp and 150NM (15.29kgm) of torque at 1750rpm from its 936cc engine which in a compact hatch promises sprightly performance. However, the key question that’s yet to be answered is: how fuel efficient the Beat Diesel really is? According to the official Indian Driving Cycle figure, the Beat Diesel gives 23.99kpl which is about one kpl behind the lndica eV2. However, in real-world conditions, which involves slower average speeds and more stop-go driving, the Beat diesel could have an edge. Also not known is the price but it’s likely that GM India will peg it at a Rs 80,000 premium over the 1.2 petrol Beat.
Maruti ends Swift production
Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL) has stopped production of the current Swift Hatchback at their Mansear Plant. The outgoing model will be replaced by an all-new Swift next month. The current generation Swift has been available in the Indian market since 2005 in both petrol and diesel models, and the replacement will offer both engine options as well.
The all-new Swift looks quite similar in terms of styling to the outgoing model but is in fact built on an all-new platform and each body panel is new and is bigger than its predecessor in every dimension. The interior gets some styling cues from the larger Kizashi saloon, particularly in its centre console. The new Swift, like the outgoing model, is expected to spawn a saloon variant as well.
Engine options are likely to be carried over from the outgoing model. The petrol will be powered by a 1.2-litre, 84bhp K-series motor while the diesel engine will be a 1.3-litre unit sourced from Fiat.
The Swift competes with the likes of Ford Figo, Nissan Micra, Skoda Fabia, Volkswagen Polo, Fiat Punto and the recently launched Toyota Liva. Bolero Facelift Spy Pics
We recently revealed in the “Confidential Section” of our latest issue that Mahindra is planning a facelift of the Bolero MUV and these are the first spy pictures, sent by our forum member T.S. Vipul, taken at Mahindra’s facility at Haridwar.
As seen in one of the images, Mahindra will add a new variant called the ZLX in the Bolero lineup. The refreshed Bolero gets a slightly revised grill with a darker grey shade (which was earlier body-coloured) that gives it a more prominent look. The front bumper is all-new as well. The updated Bolero will have a rear-wiper with a defroster to meet future CMVR (Central Motor Vehicle Rules); however there are no fog lamps and no alloy wheels.
The interiors are where the major changes are evident; the plastics are now beige in colour, there is an all-new digital instrument console, with an LED display for the speedometer, fuel gauge and engine temperature. There is an all-new leather-wrapped steering wheel with aluminium inserts that give the car a better overall feel. The centre console now gets wood trims, however the overall plastic quality remains similiar to the earlier model which is quite poor,
The refreshed Bolero will get the same 75bhp Low-Cost-Common-Rail (LCCR) engine from the recently introduced Scorpio EX. The updated Bolero will hit the streets very shortly.
Fiat's 'diesel for petrol' offer
Fiat India has introduced a unique marketing initiative titled ‘Diesel at the price of petrol’, for the month of July. If you buy a Fiat Linea or Punto, you get a chance to participate in a lucky draw, which may entitle you to a year’s supply of fuel or the diesel variant of the petrol car that you plan to buy.
In case you plan to buy a diesel Fiat and your name comes up in the lucky draw, you’ll have to pay only for the corresponding petrol variant. If you buy the Linea T-jet, and win, you get Rs 100,000 off on the ex-showroom price.This initiative is meant to influence customers who would prefer to buy a diesel Fiat due to the low running costs but are deterred due to the high initial premium. Buyers can opt for a diesel Linea or Punto at the price of the petrol variant or equivalent cash back.
The offer is not limited only to the winners of the contest; all buyers of Fiat cars in July will be provided free fuel for three months and discounts on the first year’s insurance and free 50 months roadside assistance. Customers exchanging their old cars to upgrade to a Linea or Punto get an additional exchange bonus of upto Rs 20,000.
Land Rover To Update 2012 Range
Land Rover has revealed a host of revisions to its Discovery 4 and Range Rover Sport models for 2012, including more power and a new eight-speed ZF gearbox.
The 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel offered in both cars has had a 10bhp boost to take power to 252bhp. The ZF gearbox, also found in Jaguar and BMW models, comes with a ‘Drive Select’ rotary gearshift and steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Land Rover claims shift times of just 200 milliseconds in both cars.
Both cars, which were last heavily revised in 2010, have also undergone a series of subtle exterior cosmetic changes and an increase in both standard and optional interior equipment.
The entry-level eight-speaker audio and navigation systems on both cars are now Bluetooth, DAB, USB and iPod compatible. India-spec cars get a 9-speaker Harmon Kardon sound system standard.
New 19-inch alloys come as standard on the Discovery 4, with Gloss Black 20-inch alloys available on HSE models. HSE models also get a Timed Climate system that pre-heats the cabin and engine in cold weather.
Changes to the Range Rover Sport include a new automatic one-piece tailgate, a seven-inch Dual View option for the front navigation system and Gloss Black detailing for the headlight inners and front grille surrounds.
The only additional changes to the supercharged 5.0-litre V8 model Range Rover Sport are new 20-inch alloys and a ‘Light Atlas’ finish for the front grille. This model’s power outputs and economy and CO2 figures remain unchanged.
The updated models will reach Indian shores early next year.
2012 Toyota Camry Leaked Image
Here is the first leaked image of the upcoming new Toyota Camry, to be officially unveiled later this year.
As is evident from the picture, the 2012 Camry seems to possess heavily redesigned front styling with a more Japanese flavour. The headlights are stretched back to the wheel arches which add a sense of width, and there is a strong kink on the headlight. The grille comprises a single dual chrome horizontal slats with a larger Toyota logo, and some Lexus-like cues are apparent in the styling too. The bumpers get a more aggressive stance with a taller but narrower air dam and a more pronounced chin.
Overall, the profile looks sportier than the outgoing model, and the car will be slightly larger dimensionally. However, there is no news on the engines, and we expect the current ones tuned for better fuel efficiency.
Updated Corolla Altis launched
Toyota Kirloskar Motors (TKM) has launched an updated version of its Corolla Altis saloon.
The refreshed model now comes with new set of headlamps, refreshed grille and bumper, updated rear lamps. The interiors now feature darker mock wood trim.
The petrol engine has been tweaked and will now deliver 138bhp, 7bhp more than the earlier model.The updated Altis now is equipped with new gearbox options; the 5-speed manual is now replaced by a new 6-speed unit while the top-end automatic version gets a new 7-speed CVT unit. Diesel models will feature the same 6-speed manual gearbox.
The prices of the petrol version have gone up by Rs 15,000-24,000 while the diesel prices have been hiked by Rs 15,000-30,000 depending on model. The Altis petrol is now priced from Rs 10.53 lakh to Rs 14.77 lakh while the diesel variant starts at Rs 11.46 lakh to Rs 14.55 lakh; all prices ex-showroom Delhi.
BMW S1000RR Review, Test Ride
Every square inch of the 1000cc supersport territory is crammed with precise, potent and devastatingly quick motorcycles. These cutting edge motorcycles have honed their skills to a gleaming razors edge over several generations and racing programmes. Every gram and millimetre is pared away until bare necessity and ruthless pace remain. A quick first ride on BMW's S1000RR shows the lack of accomplished racing pedigree or decades of superbike building experience hasn't stopped them from achieving lofty targets.
The S1000RR's design cuts through the clutter. An S1000RR face is cockeyed. The size of the low beam (larger unit) and the high beam designed purely to meet functional needs. This disruptive design is carried forward to the engine fairing. The lower portion uses a matte black finish. Riders get a simple, legible analogue rev-counter, while the digital display shows speed, gear engaged, lap times and engine settings. The compact tank has contrasting black sections. The tail rises sharply to end in a sharp toothed rear.
A 999cc motorcycle with 193bhp on tap at 13000rpm and 11.4kgm of torque made at 9750rpm has all the raw and rabid trappings of a litre class bike. In pre-programmed ‘Rain’ mode the ECU caps engine power output to 150bhp, with throttle responses left smoother. Dynamic Traction Control and Race ABS also cut in earlier.
Three other modes, Sport, Race and Slick deliver the full blast of 193 horses. However, the last two modes are to be reserved for track use with purpose built tyres. Riding with Sport mode engaged means only a quick twist of the throttle sends the BMW shooting ahead with intimidating intensity.
The BMW's six-speed gearbox allows smooth, quick shifting, although finding neutral can sometimes be fiddly. On the go, optional High Performance Gearshift Assistant lets you shift up with the throttle wide open, without the clutch. Overall engine refinement is excellent, the cable operated clutch offering a light action that belies the power at hand.
First impressions suggest the seating position is as comfortable as it gets in the supersports class. At low speed, the S1000RR feels easy and hassle free to steer, as speeds build this calm and no-nonsense air only getting stronger. The S1000RR feels slim and light from the moment you sling your leg over.
By way of suspension the S1000RR does without BMW's Duolever, instead using 46mm upside down front forks. At the rear, the S1000RR deploys a conventional double sided swingarm with a progressive monoshock.
The BMW turns with great confidence. It is direct and agile. The brakes offer fantastic bite, as also great feel. The suspension proved surprisingly adept at dealing with even far from smooth roads.
Blame German heritage, solid engineering and their fabled efficiency for the manner in which the S1000RR delivers hyper-performance and race track worthy handling, yet still remains so easy to use. Cutting edge technology makes this fierce Beemer an adaptable model. The S1000RR comes across as one heck of an accomplished motorcycle, and you can read the full story about it in our July issue already on stands across India.
