FIRST DRIVE NEW BMW 3-SERIES REVIEW, TEST DRIVE
Testing a mainstream production saloon on a Formula 1 race track doesn’t serve any real purpose except to tell you how quick you (and the car) really are.
All-New Swift Review, Test Drive
The new Swift has finally arrived on Indian roads and we’ve just driven it. At first glance, it looks just like the earlier model but the changes are difficult to tell immediately. The fact is that this car is a grounds-up new generation of the Swift.
The new Swift is based on an all-new platform and is now both longer and wider. It gains 90mm in overall length and the wheelbase is 40mm longer. While overall width has increased by 5mm, height remains unchanged.
The benefits of the increased dimensions can be seen in the improved cabin space and the Swift now feels bigger inside, with more knee room for the rear passengers. This is aided, in part, by the indents in the back of the front seats. However, just like the old Swift, the rear still feels claustrophobic due to the small window area.
The Swift’s interior styling, which is heavily borrowed from its Kizashi sibling, is now plusher. The new instruments look superb and the steering-mounted controls feel good to operate. However, material quality hasn’t been improved substantially and the tiny boot space continues to disappoint.
The car is now sportier to drive and the 1.2 K-series petrol gets variable valve timing (VVT) to bump up power to 86bhp. The engine, which was a gem earlier, is simply brilliant now. It loves to be revved and refinement levels are a lot better than before. The addition of VVT has now rid the engine of the slightly weak bottom end. The torque curve is now much flatter and the power delivery more linear. The engine revs cleanly and is vibe-free all the way to the red line, sounding nice near the limit. Maruti says VVT on the 1.2 K-series engine has improved fuel efficiency by four percent and the Indian driving cycle economy figure is an impressive 18.6kpl.
The 1.3 diesel Multi-jet engine remains largely unchanged but the carmaker’s effort to make the cabin a quieter place is evident. The motor, which is still mated to a fixed geometry turbo and develops the same 74bhp, feels more refined than before. There is a bit of lag initially but once past that, it makes good progress. Surprisingly, the diesel has lost its strong mid-range and we found ourselves downshifting more often than we did before. Maruti informs us that the engines have been tuned more for efficiency, which has compromised their flexible nature to some extent but not so much that it would bother most Swift owners.
Ride and handling is substantially improved. Turn-in is sharp, there’s grip to spare and body roll is progressive enough. The ride quality is much improved in terms of bump absorption over big road undulations and the car feels less fidgety at highway speeds as well.
Suzuki has also reworked the steering and the new Swift gets a new variable-gear ratio design and low-play joints. The steering now feels a lot more positive around the centre position and a quicker ratio allows for sharper directional changes. However, it still lacks consistency. It is quick enough but becomes very light and disconnected for a moment after turn-in before it weights up.
Overall, the all-new Swift is lighter, longer and more spacious than before, delivering improved performance, driver dynamics and enhanced fuel economy. Suzuki has done well to iron out most of the flaws in the earlier Swift while retaining all the really good bits. That’s an extremely practical and effective way to ensure that the new Swift will start from where the old one left – right on the top of its class.
Mercedes SLK Launch On August 10
Mercedes-Benz India is all set to launch the new SLK in India on August 10th. The SLK made its global debut at the manufacturer’s 125th birthday celebrations in Stuttgart in January this year.
The new SLK continues to eschew a fabric roof for a reworked version of the old model’s folding hard-top. It now offers the choice of either standard aluminum, fixed-tint glass or electro-magnetic variable-tint glass panel.
Inside, there’s an angular new dashboard, modeled on that of the SLS, with distinctive vents, reworked instruments, more contemporary switchgear and a new range of trims.
The 2011 SLK has a new rear-wheel drive platform. Mercedes will launch the SLK 350 in India, which features Mercedes’ new V6. The 3.5-litre direct-injection motor kicks out 306bhp and is paired with a seven-speed automatic gearbox. It offers vastly improved performance and economy.
The SLK competes with the likes of the BMW Z4 and the Porsche Cayman/Boxster and the Audi TT and will be available at an estimated ex-showroom price of Rs 65 lakh.
HM To Launch New Vehicles Soon
Hindustan Motors is all set to launch a range of new vehicle models and variants in the current financial year, with the first product scheduled to be introduced soon.
The announcement was made by C K Birla, chairman, Hindustan Motors, at the company’s 69th annual general meeting. Hindustan Motors, the country’s oldest car company, has decided to lay major emphasis on development and launch of new vehicles and products to ensure productive use of unutilized capacity and sustainable growth.
HM has completed the development of a 0.8-tonne pickup, a 7 to 9-seater commercial passenger carrier on Ambassador platform, a 9-10-seater passenger carrier on LCV Winner platform and an upgraded cargo version Winner at its Uttarpara plant in Hooghly, West Bengal.
Available in both diesel and CNG models, these vehicles will be launched in the market very soon. The company’s Chennai plant, where HM manufactures the Mitsubishi range of vehicles, will witness the launch of new generation Pajero Sports Utility Vehicle, 7-seater Outlander and an upgraded Montero.
The company is also developing a Euro IV-compliant diesel engine on CRDI platform in collaboration with a European company and the new engine should be ready for use in the current financial year. The CRDI Generation II fuel efficient engine will meet BS IV norms for both passenger and commercial range of vehicles, Birla added.
HM will continue to augment its distribution network by setting up new dealerships. Road shows have just concluded in West Bengal, Assam, Orissa and Bihar. The Tamil Nadu-Puducherry road show will draw to a close on August 11. These will be followed by pan-India road shows of HM’s existing and forthcoming vehicles.
Etios Diesel Coming This September
These spy pictures of the Etios diesel sent by our reader Sreeraj TS and Ashwin M undergoing pre-production trials is a clear indication that Toyota is planning an early launch of the diesel-powered saloon. According to company sources, Toyota has eased bottlenecks in manufacturing to bring forward the launch of the diesel variant. Also, with the sharp tilt towards diesel cars in the Indian market, the huge pent-up demand and long waiting list for the Etios petrol have reduced dramatically.
Toyota plans to launch the Etios diesel in September to capitalise on the festive season when car sales usually spike. The Etios diesel will come with the same 1.4 turbo-diesel that powers the Corolla diesel but will not get the bigger saloon’s more expensive Variable Geometry Turbo (VGT) hardware. The Etios diesel will be boosted with a simpler Fixed Geometry Turbo (FGT) and hence the power output is expected to be in the region of 75bhp (the Corolla diesel develops 87bhp). However, for the lightweight Etios, the lower output seems adequate, especially since the focus for this entry midsize saloon is fuel efficiency. In fact, the Etios diesel is expected to set a new standard for fuel efficiency among midsize saloons which, along with its spacious cabin, could make it unbeatable in terms of practicality.
The Etios diesel is likely to cost around Rs 100,000 more than its petrol equivalent, which pegs the range between Rs 6-8 lakh. That’s still pretty good value and the waiting list for the diesel version of Toyota’s new saloon is sure to extend into the New Year.
W201 SUV Likely Launch On Sept 26
Mahindra is most likely to launch its new global SUV, codenamed the W201, on September 26, 2011. As per our sources, the SUV manufacturer has already directed its vendors to gear up for the launch of its new flagship.
The W201 is M&M’s first attempt at a monocoque vehicle, powered by a transverse engine driving the front wheels. It has got perfect proportions and looks hunkered down in a way only a monocoque or unibody construction allows. As seen from our computer-generated images, the high mounted, swept back headlamps and curved Mahindra grille look very attractive. The rising beltline and tapered roof give it an air of compactness and if Mahindra doesn’t add too many garish details, this almost certainly will be its most attractive product yet, which will be perfect for M&M, who is hoping its new generation vehicles will catapult it onto the global stage.
Under the skin, it will use a transversely located 2.2-litre mHawk engine and a new transaxle, specifically developed for the W201 entirely from scratch. There’s also an all-new, cable-operated gearbox with five- and six-speed options developed with help from Ricardo. Engine power will be increased from 120bhp to 140bhp and torque is estimated to be around 32.6kgm. The company is even evaluating bumping the power up to 170bhp in the future with a twin turbo version. There will also be a lot of goodies like traction control, ESP, and hill descent control as well.
The W201, Mahindra’s most important product, will be positioned above the Scorpio and it could cost around Rs 13 lakh for the base 2WD version. Watch this space for more.
